SCIENCE

The mission of Archbishop Molloy High School's Science Department is to inspire students to explore, understand, and appreciate the natural world by fostering a deep understanding of fundamental scientific principles.

GOALS

· Encourage exploration and curiosity
· Foster scientific investigation and inquiry

· Cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills

· Develop scientific literacy
· Promote ethical and environmental awareness

Molloy's science teachers aim to ignite a passion for science by providing hands-on laboratory experiences and connecting scientific concepts to real-life applications. Our students graduate with the knowledge, skills, and ethical perspective necessary to achieve scientific literacy, address global challenges, and make meaningful contributions to society.

Students are required to complete three years of science, typically following the sequence of Biology, Chemistry, and either Earth Science or Physics. An Advanced Life Science class is offered to qualified students who passed the Living Environment Regents in 8th grade. Additionally, selected juniors have the option to take AP Environmental Science in place of Earth Science or Physics.

Science Research

A three-year Science Research program beginning sophomore year is available for high-achieving students who want to further their scientific research skills. Run by science teacher Ms. Mary Mallia, the program gives students the opportunity to learn and conduct original research on any topic of their choosing. Sophomore students focus on literature reviews, juniors work with a mentor to discover and plan their own project, and seniors perform their own research based on the work they did the year before.

Senior Electives

Seniors are encouraged to explore their scientific interests in advanced courses. These include:

  • AP Biology
  • AP Chemistry
  • AP Physics 1
  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • College Chemistry 1 & 2
  • Environmental Science
  • Forensic Science
  • Marine Biology
