MATHEMATICS

The Math Department at Archbishop Molloy High School recognizes all students at every level, offering classes for the budding mathematician all the way to the experienced statistician.

GOALS

To support and encourage all students at whatever ability level they enter our classrooms.

To create an environment where students can ask questions, feel respected, and collaborate with peers.

To help students appreciate mathematics and understand how it works in the real world.

To challenge students in their thinking and prepare them for their future careers.

Molloy's Math Department recognizes that all students are at various levels in the subject entering our school, and therefore offer honors, non-honors, and regents level classes for underclassmen. Some special highlights include a non-regents Advanced Honors course that recognizes students who have taken and passed the Algebra 1 regents in eighth grade, and Advanced Placement Pre-Calculus and Algebra 2/Pre-Calculus Honors for juniors that wish to pursue high level mathematics courses.

The department provides a number of senior-level courses to match students with their particular interests, including:  AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics, Calculus 1 and Scholars Calculus 2, Statistics, PreCalculus, Mathematical Principles of Accounting, and College Algebra. Many senior year math courses have the option to earn college credit through college advantage programs, which you can learn about here.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2024-25 MATH TEAM!

Molloy’s 2024-25 Math Team did extremely well this competition season! Our team won First Place in the Catholic Math League Advanced Math Division 3 competition, with an award presented to Nikitas Vlachos as the Individual Champion in the division! Molloy’s team also won First Place in the Division 2 Algebra 2 Championship, and Michael Lee ‘27 placed 3rd nationally in Algebra 2. The most prestigious trophy the Stanners took home was a National Championship in Algebra 2! National championships are exceedingly difficult to win, making this accomplishment all the more impressive. Of the top 29 overall Math League participants, four of them were Stanners!

Ms. Lauren Pizzo, moderator of the team, coaches the team throughout the school year. During meetings in November, December, February, and March, all members of the team complete a test that matches their grade level: either Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, or Advanced Math. All of the exams are non-calculator, and all 25 questions must be answered in 30 minutes or less!

Michael Lee says he “enjoys being on the team because there is a strong sense of community and team work.” He continues, “We all push each other to do our best, and it is extremely rewarding to see our collective efforts lead to success.” Nikitas Vlachos is proud of his own accomplishments this year, graduating on a high note. “ I’m very proud of myself and especially of the team as a whole for performing so well this year. This was a very strong year for the Math Team, and I hope this momentum can continue in future years and that Molloy’s Math Team will continue performing exceptionally and will keep expanding as more and more people join to express their talent in math.”

Ms. Pizzo is excited for the success of this year’s Math Team, saying they did incredible work. “ I am so proud of all the members of the team - showing up after a long day of school to work on more math questions. It shows such dedication and a love of math. Winning first place in our division in Algebra 2 and Advanced Math is a great accomplishment on its own, but this year we also took home first place in the nation for Algebra 2! It is such a joy to see young people interested and passionate about Math."
