Computer Science @ Molloy: Fall 2020 Recap

Students Virtually Attend “Exploring the Ethics of AI” Panel Discussion Sponsored by Microsoft

by Ms. Edit Boral (December 2020)

On December 8th, Molloy computer science students virtually joined some of the nation’s top AI experts for a panel discussion about artificial intelligence (AI). The panel talked about how AI works, why does it matter and what ethical implications does it have.

Knowing that AI impacts our entire world, students were excited to learn about some of the cool ways that AI is used as well as about algorithmic bias and the future of work.

“I was most interested learning about the use of Artificial Intelligence in farming in Ghana. I was surprised that AI had such a wide reach, even in agriculture,” said Charles Chelstowski ‘23.

“This panel taught us a lot and it really expanded my view on AI. There are so many things that AI helps us do in society surrounding our everyday lives such as machines in factories. It was very important to me that the panel brought up career opportunities in the AI world such as software engineering and data analytics which both sound interesting to me,” said Kaleem Bent. “On the other hand, I was really surprised to learn that AI offers job opportunities not only to those who work in the field of computer science or math but also for people in art or music,” added Isha Patel '23.

Congrats to our winners and everyone who submitted designs. Click the thumbnail to see the top designs.

Amazon Engineers Virtually Visit Molloy Students

by Ms. Edit Boral (November 2020)

During the first and second week of November, Molloy students had a chance to virtually meet and chat during their computer science classes with the following four guest speakers from Amazon:

  • Litmanovich Lenara, Recruiting Coordinator on the Amazon Consumer Team
  • Terence Truong, Solutions Architect Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Amit Lodh, Senior Leader and Solutions Architecture Manager on the AWS Team
  • Jaswanthi Meganathan, Engagement Manager, AWS

*Each session pictured in order in right column, photos 3-6.

Each Amazon volunteer was thrilled to connect and share insights from their computer science journey with Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) students and Ms. Boral. They talked about what it’s like to actually study computer science in college and work in the tech industry, including at Amazon. Students also had a chance to ask questions and connect with the volunteers on LinkedIn. Molloy’s Computer Science program offers students the opportunity to obtain Amazon Certificates. These certifications carry weight when pursuing future job opportunities – particularly at Amazon.
