Summer Enrichment Program

This major will include three exciting topics: Intro to Computer Science, Programming with Python, and Intro to Game Development. Our program offers hands-on instruction in each of these areas, giving participants the opportunity to learn valuable skills while having fun and making new friends.  With experienced instructors, a supportive community, and a fun and engaging curriculum, our Computer Science summer major is the perfect way to give children a head start in this exciting field.

Participants will embark on a comprehensive journey through the game of chess, starting with the core objectives and moving onto intricate checkmate patterns, special moves, and strategic planning. Our curriculum emphasizes a fun-filled yet educational approach, incorporating engaging activities like tactical puzzles, team competitions, and individual challenges to foster a competitive spirit and camaraderie among participants.

In this major, students will learn how to develop their natural talent and explore their creative side through an exploration of multiple types of sculptural design.  Students will explore and work on the basics of acrylic painting.

African Drumming is an engaging, hands-on course designed to introduce students to the fundamental techniques and rhythms of West African drumming, both in traditional and contemporary styles. Through applied learning, students will explore African rhythm, melody, form, and structure, gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural and musical significance of drumming in African traditions.

This course incorporates traditional learning methods, listening exercises, and music analysis, all experienced through rehearsals, discussions, readings, and guided listening. No prior musical experience is required—we provide the drums, and you bring your enthusiasm to learn!

This class is led by Mr. Jones, a world-traveled performer and educator with extensive experience in teaching and performing African drumming. Now, we are excited to offer this dynamic and educational experience to all music lovers looking to immerse themselves in the rich traditions of African percussion!

Participants will experience “hands on,” directed activities that will explore basic concepts in physics and chemistry. Lessons and activities will focus on Newton’s laws of motion, the fundamentals of chemical reactions and energy transformations. Participants will engage with multiple lab-based experiences including Rube-Goldberg constructions (potential & kinetic energy), build-your-own circuits (electrical energy), and rubber bands & popper toy analysis (elastic potential energy).

Participants will explore their creativity in a safe and encouraging environment through various improvisational and theatrical games in order to gain confidence onstage (and off!). Skills such as focus, spatial awareness, active listening, storytelling, and basic acting techniques will be incorporated into all activities throughout the week.

This course will introduce you to the basics of producing the various materials needed for a successful broadcast. Through Adobe’s Photoshop and After Effects programs students will learn the fundamentals of graphic design and animation. iMovie will be used to introduce students to video editing and production. Finally, near the end of the week, students will head to the Broadcast Studio to demonstrate their work during a live stream.

In this minor, students will cultivate their creativity by exploring the many facets of drawing through both traditional and digital media.

Broadcast journalism is the field of news that is shared using electronic methods such as radio, cable, and internet. In this course students will learn how news is reported online through written word and photography. Activities will include creating an online “program newsletter” as well as a podcast based on the student’s personal interest. 

We surf the web all the time; have you ever wondered how it is created? This minor will focus on Web design and Web development through an introduction to HTML/CSS and JavaScript. It will also offer a fun project that will incorporate principles of robotics and artificial intelligence. This program will be based in hands-on instruction in each of these areas and give participants the opportunity to explore a potential career and learn valuable skills while having fun and making new friends.

Have you ever tried to solve a problem and have been told, "It's not rocket science" - Well sometimes, it is! Come engage in an inquiry-based introduction to the mechanics of rockets. Participants will take part in a hands-on approach to the many different aspects of rockets, including forces, weight, thrust, lift, and wing design.
