October 4th — The Second Annual Homecoming Picnic Cancelled
Picnic Cancelled
Due to light pre-registration The Second Annual Homecoming Picnic has been cancelled. It seems that this time of year is full of family activities and Fall work around the house and the timing might not be right for this type of activity. We will consider alternatives for next year. In the meantime, please enjoy the Harvey Memorial Fun Run!

Faculty Spotlight — Coach Mike McCleary
Photo: Charlie Flood
Coach McCleary grew up in Ridgewood, Queens, and attended Brooklyn Technical High School. As a young student his sport was Basketball. While at Queens College he followed his passion and continued playing Basketball, but there was always a part of him that wanted to coach.
That part of his career began at St. Anthony’s High School on LI in 1986-87, followed by work at his alma mater — Queens College as Assistant Coach from 1987-1991. Mike moved from Queens College to SUNY Farmingdale in 1991-1995 where he served as an Assistant Coach and then Head Coach. During his career he has had teams ranked in the top 25 of the NJCAA with a career record of 69-27. He served as Assistant at Fairfield University from 1995-1998. His two post season appearances were in 1996 at the NIT and in 1997 at the NCAA.
In 1998 Coach came to Molloy as a teacher and Athletic Director. He serves as the Assistant Varsity Basketball coach. One of his greatest challenges and accomplishments was overseeing the development of a woman’s athletics program which increased the number of sports from 9-16 and the number of teams from 16-33. These teams have proven to be formidable competitors. The two key factors that made Molloy an attractive opportunity for coach were our dedication to academics and commitment to the development of a strong athletic program.
According to Coach McCleary, “every year brings new challenges both academically and athletically. I feel fortunate to be involved in a school that values both”.
Coach lives nearby with his wife Judi, and their children James and Kaitlyn.

We’ve had a wonderful start to our 08-09 year here Campus Ministry.
All four Holy Spirit Masses for each grade went off wonderfully- with our celebrants Fr. Frank Shannon, Fr. Jim Nunes and Fr. Pat Flanagan. During the first mass we installed our 31 new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. They will be assigned to four different hospitals and one nursing home. This ministry will begin October 6th.
We opened up registration for all four encounters and all 242 spots were filled in the matter of 1 day! The November Junior retreat was also opened, and that was filled in one day as well! Truly a sign of how much Esopus means to our Stanners.
Our Right-to-Life club will be focusing on Breast Cancer Awareness Month this month as we seek to educate our student body about this life threatening disease. We will also raise money to help support the worthy cause.
Our Operation Christmas Child program will begin on October 22nd — this is where we ask the whole Molloy community to make care packages for children around the world. Anyone is invited to make a package. Pamphlets are already in the office and online @ www.samaritanspurse.org
And our annual Coat Drive will be from 11/3-11/17. Last year saw a record number of coats (620). We accept brand new and slightly used coats and we hope to do even better this year.

Cecilia Fonseca ’04 and Kristen Classi ’04 Visit Molloy
Cecilia Fonesca stopped in while enjoying a day off from her final semester at Hofstra University this week. She majored in Sociology and has taken a number of Education courses while studying there. Once she graduates she would like to work in the Food Service or Hospitality industry. Her goal is to one day open her own business. For now, she is interested in “learning the ropes” with a solid restaurateur or franchise operation. Both Cecilia and Kristen acknowledged Mr. Smith as “the tough teacher who set the course for learning and taught us to be professional in all we do.”
Kristen Classi told us that she just graduated from FIT and has landed a position with COACH®. While at FIT she majored in Fashion Merchandise Management and did internships with Jones NY, and DKNY. When asked who she credits with challenging her the most here at Molloy she named Mr. Da Grossa without hesitation — “ he gave me the confidence to pursue fashion and art as a career.”

As with every visit, I seek to understand what Non Scholae — Sed Vitae means to Stanners. These two didn’t let me down. Molloy is a place you can come to “fill up your cup” when you need refreshment. Being a Stanner means that “you know where you came from and that you need to give back for the gifts you have been given.” Two valuable lessons from the class of 2004.
We need your opinions! The Office of Advancement is forming Alumni Roundtables (by decades - 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 00’s) to provide us with feedback and to help answer the question, “What does it take to connect (or reconnect) Molloy with its Alumni?” If you are interested in working with other Stanners from your decade and providing your alma mater with valuable input on programming and outreach, contact Steve Kimmons, Executive Director of Advancement, at 718-943-3186 or skimmons@molloyhs.org.
God Bless All Stanners!
