Greetings from Molloy — Week Four

Upcoming Alumni Events

October 4th — The Second Annual Homecoming Picnic

This Alumni event is an opportunity to visit the school and have some fun. The day offers games and activities in both gyms and the back yard of the school. We will have Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, watermelon and soda as our picnic menu for the day! And, according to Mr. Sherry, those hot dogs were “something special”.

An adult ticket is $10.00 and a child’s ticket (Under 12) is $5.00 (children two and under are admitted free!)

Please register and pay online for your tickets. You may purchase tickets at the door.

We will have live entertainment provided by “Single File to Bliss — The band formerly known as “Cutting Edge” — a “Mostly Stanner Band” performing original music, contests, a DJ, Bouncy Room and Special Basketball for the toddlers, Face Painting and Frisbee Golf… And, yes, we will have the second annual Hula-Hoop contest each hour… There are prizes for the Free Throw contest, the Hula Hoop Contest and Frisbee Golf…

We are looking for anyone interested in playing softball that day… we have reserved the field and can arrange games for any “groups” that wish to form. Call Charlie Flood in the Alumni office if you are interested in putting together a team for the day.

Around the School

Opening Liturgy

This week each class had the opportunity to come together in community to celebrate the start of the school year at the opening Liturgy. Brother Roy reminded the students that the space we all know as the Curran Gym is to be treated as a sanctuary while at Mass. This was easy do to as the choir provided wonderful music and Mr. Germano organized the Mass for maximum student participation. The Alumni Association provided a new banner and stand for our Liturgies this year. As you start this “school year” with us, please extend the “Peace” to your world as we see Father and our students doing in the photograph.

Freshman Parent Night

Thursday night brought hundreds of parents to Molloy — Freshman parents, that is. They came to experience a very short day of classes — seven minutes each, and to see the school and get to know some of the faculty and administration. We had a number of Alumni and many volunteer parents in the audience. They all helped to direct the new parents to the odd or even classroom they sought and answered questions about Molloy. A number of first time parents signed up to help out at future events. In all, the evening was a success!

Freshman Field Day!

Photo: Derek Sokolowski

In less than desirable weather — a nor’easter came into town, the Freshmen gathered for their opening Liturgy and Field Day activities. According to Coach Rodgers, “AW Jeepers! A little water won’t kill them… let’s toughen up a bit”. But, seriously, with many modifications, the field day was a hit… Our faculty and coaching staff are to be commended for all of the work they put into this one day event. The class camaraderie was evident everywhere!

The Sporting Season is upon us

Photo: Jim Sheldon

Volleyball and Girls Soccer are struggling early but are working hard to finish strong. We wish them will in the back half of the season.

Boys Soccer looks strong and should compete for a Diocesan and City Championship when all is said and done.

Baseball and softball are in scrimmage season but they look good and we have high hopes for the spring.

Girls Tennis will defend last years Diocesan Championship this year. They were State finalist last year, and so far the are continuing their run. They are in first place with a perfect 5-0 record.

X-Country started their season last weekend and we are working towards the championships.

Go Molloy!

Faculty Spotlight — Katherine Loughran

Katherine’s Catholic Education began at St Gregory the Great Elementary School, Bellerose and then continued at an all girls Catholic High School Dominican Commercial, Jamaica. Later, she graduated from St John’s University, where she majored in Government.

After graduating from college she worked for many years in the legal, real estate, and banking world all associated with residential and commercial business ventures. There was something missing, she was never satisfied, the career didn’t challenge her. Her sisters who are teachers tried to encourage her to change careers. Her twin sister, Patricia Gambill-Attanasio teaches for the NYC Board of Education at P.S 207 in Howard Beach and her younger sister, Teresa Gerstner is a math specialist staff developer for the NYC Board of Education in the Bronx. Both sisters told her that teaching would be the most rewarding experience.

When her father was diagnosed with cancer, he had contemplated the choices that he had made in his life. If God had given him a second chance to change his life choices—he would have chosen teaching. Her father had learned that “one’s life is about giving back. It’s the greatest gift”. When her father had passed away, she did some soul searching and realized, at 40-years-of-age, it was time to go back to school. She obtained her Masters degree in Social Studies at St John’s University, School of Education.

Her first teaching position was with the NYC Board of Education as a substitute teacher in three districts. She thought if she could survive this, she could survive anything! Her phone rang off the hook and she was hooked! Her sisters were right, she loved teaching. Her second teaching position was with Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Forest Hills. She stayed on for three years but needed something more challenging.

When she came to Molloy she saw how resilient the Marist Brothers were. It’s not a school, it’s a community. A community that gets “involved” whether one gets involved at summer camps, retreats, sports, tutoring, drama, campus ministry or many of the other activities. One learns to become the holistic person. She is the adviser to student council, yearbook, photography, International Day, and Freshmen/Sophomore retreats. Nobody twists her arm to get “involved” she simply loves this community, it’s the greatest gift!

Steven ’88 and Monica Scacalossi

My wife Monica and I are pleased to announce the birth of our son, Jake on June 21st. His older sisters, Amanda (age 10) and Vanessa (age 7) absolutely adore and dote on their little brother. We are truly blessed to have this addition to the Scac family but can’t wait for him to start sleeping through the night!

General Request

In these times of economic challenge we hear of many Stanners changing jobs and looking for employment — especially in the finance sector. Just this week we learned about one Stanner family’s challenge to keep their home from foreclosure. Please keep this family and all Stanners in your thoughts and prayers as we face these difficult times.
