This Alumni event is an opportunity to visit the school and have some fun. The day offers games and activities in both gyms and the back yard of the school. We will have Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, watermelon and soda as our picnic menu for the day! And, according to Mr. Sherry, those hot dogs were “something special”.

An adult ticket is $10.00 and children (Under 12) are $5.00 (Two and under are Free!)

Please register and pay online for your tickets. You may purchase tickets at the door.

We will have live entertainment provided by “Single File to Bliss — The band formerly known as “Cutting Edge” — a “Mostly Stanner Band” performing original music, contests, a DJ, Bouncy Room and Special Basketball for the toddlers, Face Painting and Frisbee Golf… And, yes, we will have the second annual Hula-Hoop contest each hour… There are prizes for the Free Throw contest, the Hula Hoop Contest and Frisbee Golf…

We are looking for anyone interested in playing softball that day… we have reserved the field and can arrange games for any “groups” that wish to form. Call Charlie Flood in the Alumni office if you are interested in putting together a team for the day.

Book Sale Ends – Brother James Survives

Br. James Vagan in the bookstore

The annual book distribution and book and supply sale is over and as you can see… it is never an easy task. Consider this factoid. Brother James takes in more in one week than the average independent bookstore will do in two months… and for the most part, he does it all by himself in the “bookstore in the hall.” Thanks, Brother for all you do here at Molloy!

Molloy Remembers September 11th

Molloy remembers the tragedy of September 11th

As our School Calendar Suggests — ‘Lest we Forget — this week marks the seventh anniversary of September 11th — a date of great sadness for the Molloy community. Brother Roy commented on the day and we stood in silence as we reflected. It brings to mind the reason he ends each round of morning announcements with the line — “And let us remember to pray for each other…”

Chemistry Lab Nears Completion — Passes Acid Test

Chemistry lab equipment ready to be installed

Photo: Charlie Flood

The final components for the new ventilation system arrived today and will be installed shortly. It seems that we are on target to have this new lab ready for inspection right on schedule. We were targeting the middle of October for completion. Anyone who has seen is responds the same way — WOW… this is an example of a 21st Century Classroom. The entire Science Department has worked very hard to make this dream a reality. Anyone who knows Gino ’81 and the Fazio Brothers knows that when they are on the job, the job gets done… Oh, and by the way, all of the cabinet work was done by Tom Catalanotto ’75. It is truly amazing what Stanners can do when we work together!

Another milestone in the completion of the lab was the installation of the chemical neutralization tank in the basement… done, tested and ready to go! The team was trained in the care and maintenance of this new treatment tank and we are ready for anything that the chem. Lab can generate… between the tank and the fume hood our lab is prepared!

Faculty Spotlight – Anne Lonergan

A graduate of The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica, Anne made her decision to become a teacher of Chemistry early in her life. This decision was influenced by a wonderful teacher at Mary Louis, Sr. Mary Edna — “she made learning fun!” Anyone who knows Mrs. Lonergan understands that learning can be both fun and enjoyable… and, a lifelong pursuit.

After Graduation from High School she attended St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn where she majored in Chemistry with a minor in Biology. Again, her favorite teacher, Sr. Mary Edna, surfaced at St. Joseph’s College as one of her professors.

Prior to coming to Molloy twenty-six years ago, Mrs. Lonergan taught in schools in the Brooklyn Diocese. In her own words, “I found a home at Molloy. It is a place where I thoroughly enjoy teaching”. It is a place where she not only teaches, she is a coach, a mentor and inspiration to many and a true Stanner at heart.

One of the reasons she stays at Molloy is the relationship she has developed with her fellow faculty members and mentors. Mr. Mark Lipset, Mr. John Diorio, and of course, Coach Jack Curran to name a few. When Brother Roy speaks about the Community of Molloy, this is one of the critical elements that contributes to the creation of a culture of learning at the school.

One of her after school commitments and her greatest pleasure is the work she has done as coach to the Award Winning Step Team at Molloy. And, becoming part of the Athletic Department has added a new dimension to her professional career. She takes this work with her teams to a new level each year, and has developed world class Step performers in the process. It shows what can happen when you add passion to professionalism.

Her basic philosophy toward education is that “she does not teach any particular ‘subject’, she teaches ‘people’. A lifelong learner, Anne has continued her education at Queens College taking a course on working with students with special needs on the “people side” of her development and Astronomy on the “content side”. Her next course is one on Prophets.

In her spare time she also teaches in the Diocesan Diaconate program and serves as a minister of consolation in her parish. As part of that ministry she works with children as a bereavement counselor.

Anne received her B.A. from St. Joseph’s College, her MS from St. John’s University and has completed her coursework for the Ph.D program at St. John’s University.

Many in our Stanner family know her husband, Robert from all of the volunteer hours he puts in at Molloy including countless events where he serves as Deacon to the school. Much of their life revolves around his work in the Diaconate — unless — it involves their granddaughter, Sophie. Oh yes, and did I mention their son, David and his lovely wife Loreto — Sophie’s parents…

St. Ann’s Corner

Mr. John Tolan ’46 passed away this month. Please keep him and his family in your prayers this week. He will be remembered at the Mass of Remembrance prior to the reunion in November.

Non Scholae – Sed Vitae

Roslyn Gold-Onwude with President John Sherry

Photo: Charlie Flood

We had a great visit with Roslyn Gold-Onwude last week. She stopped in while on break from her studies at Stanford University where she majors in Communications with a minor in Economics. We chatted about her time at Molloy and discussed some of the reasons she returns here from time to time. Of course she connects with the Basketball team here, and some of her teachers, and then again… there is the visit with Mr. Sherry. Oh, and yes there is the Esopus connection, and just connecting with the space that is Molloy.

We discussed some of her “tougher teachers” — the ones that most prepared her for the discipline required of a student athlete. I asked her to name three people that influenced her the most and taught her the skills of academic rigor required for Stanford. She was quick to say they all did but when pressed, singled out Mr. DeSarno because he was tough but fun, Ms. Longerano in AP Calculus and Ms. Gannon because she “tore my papers apart in draft form and taught me to get it right!”

I asked her about what it means to be a Stanner, and she commented that it was a mark of pride in school, family, heritage and much, much more. It is about being accountable, and using your skills to help others. I encourage each of us to think through the school motto — Non Scholae Sed Vitae as we go about our daily lives using the skills and maintaining the friendships we generated here at Molloy.

In Memoriam

Please keep as an intention in your prayers the repose of the soul of Shafayet Reja, ’03. Shafayet Died September 10th as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident earlier in the month. We will post arrangements as they are made available.
