Academics: Bye, Bye Chem Lab (circa 1957), Hello 21st Century Science

The plans are in and the entire Science Department is buzzing over the changes as the Chemistry Lab moves from its original 1957 home to the DeChiaro Arts and Science Center. Mr. Sherry, various architects, furnishings and material suppliers, and builders are involved in the final bidding process with construction slated to begin in June. The Chemistry lab will open for business in September.

The current Computer lab and classroom will be moved from its existing DiChiaro location to a new “Resource Center” area being dedicated in the Murphy Library. One side benefit will be the donation of computer equipment with years of usable life to a Catholic Elementary School in the Diocese.

Other changes in the department include a new three-year science elective program created by Ms. Malia and Mr. DeMarco designed to encourage greater participation in the major science competitions. If history is any indicator of future success Molloy will be on track to lead in this area again.

As you can imagine, the total cost of this renovation could reach $500,000. Brother Roy’s Walk-a-thon raised $120,000. And, the rest as they say… “Is up to the generosity of our alumni.”

There are 10 work stations available for naming opportunities at $5,000 each. As Mr. Sherry is quick to point out, that figure does not include the cost of plumbing and installation of the workstations.

For information on how you can get involved and donate to this major renovation, please call Maria Ford, Director of Donor Relations at 718-943-3148 or email her at mford@molloyhs.org.

News from the desk of Ed Jennings ’64, Assistant Principal

At this point there’s not a lot of academic news about our seniors. A number of awards will be forthcoming at the Graduation Assembly, the Graduation Ceremony, and the Graduation Liturgy. There are three-hundred and fifty-seven graduates, and twenty-one of them will receive an Academic Excellence Award, at graduation, for an overall cumulative average of 99 or above. In addition, Kerry Hughes tells me that our graduating seniors have received over nineteen-million dollars in scholarship offers.

We will post the Graduation Program immediately after the graduation exercises.

Exams continue and the “Keep Quiet” signs are in the main hallway. The Curran Gymnasium is now the “Curran Testing Center”… still a whole lot of sweating going on in there, regardless of the name.

Spiritual

The Lantern continues to meet under the direction of Mr. Mark Sweeney . Brother John Raeihle has been working with this group for a long time and is now focusing his time on his classes and the numerous retreats he organizes and runs. Lantern is time for structured and open spiritual development for all students. It is always nice to see students gathering in prayer for one another and for continued spiritual development.

Non Scholae Sed Vitae

As the school year winds down and we look forward to the relaxation of the summer months, please take a minute to reflect on the ways you might get involved at Molloy next year. We have a Parents Organization being organized, ten great reunions planned for November for the classes ending in 3’s and 8’s, The Harvey Fun Run & Homecoming Picnic in October, The Benefactor’s Reception and of course, all of the fall sports.

Plan a visit, see the new Lab, grab a quick lunch and think about how you might get involved next year. Time, Talent and Treasure are all needed to keep Molloy a vital force for good in this fast paced world today.

A career milestone was met this week with the golf team passing the 200 win mark under the guidance and coaching of Bill Niklaus ’80. His twenty years of commitment were recognized by Mr. Sherry with the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation for this milestone. The teams’ performance continues to challenge opponents each week as they use a unique combination of strategy and talent to outwit the competition at every turn. Congratulations Bill, and our Varsity team for another outstanding year!

Faculty Notes

Anne Lonergan announced the 10th Anniversary celebration of her husband Bob’s ordination to the diaconate of the Roman Catholic Church. The school presented “Deacon Bob” with a certificate of appreciation for all he does at Molloy as a “faculty spouse” and Deacon.

Dr. Patrick Murphy remains in the critical condition as he fights to recover from an intestinal transplant. Please keep Pat and his family in your prayers as they move through this difficult time. His mother, Sheila Murphy was on her way to visit Pat in the hospital when she fell and broke her hip. She is recovering in the hospital and cannot wait to be released.

In Memoriam

Please keep as intention in your prayers the repose of the soul of Mr. Harold Martinson the Father of faculty member and coach John Martinson.

Please keep as intention in your prayers the repose of the soul of Robert Menzer the Father of Nurse Kathy Forgione and grandfather of Joseph Forgione Class of 2000.

The grandparent of one of our students passed away this week and we would like to keep all of the families who have lost a love one in our prayers.

Let us also reflect on the number of souls lost in Myanmar and China this past week. Estimates are in excess of 100,000.
