Stanner E-News

Greetings from Molloy — Week Twenty-Eight — Holy Week

Spiritual

This week serves as a time of reflection for all Christians. Our Liturgy this morning brought that to life as many in our Stanner family came “home” to reflect and renew.

Mr. Germano, Ms Gannon and a number of our students and choirs rehearsed the dramatic liturgical presentation as they prepared for this Mass.

Our Campus Ministry Leader, Mike Germano and I visited with the Rector of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and his associate and worked out the final details of our 50th Anniversary Mass to be held at 10:30 on April 9th at the Cathedral. Father Shannon will Celebrate this Mass along with six additional Stanner Priests. This will be a true celebration of our heritage in Manhattan and a statement to NY that Archbishop Molloy High School is alive as a Catholic Marist School.

Athletics

The Girls Varsity Basketball team put in a fabulous season along with our Junior Varsity winning the BQ Championships and we are VERY proud of their performance. Our Varsity team did not move on to the finals at Hofstra this past weekend.

Academics

Stanners using a SmartBoard

As part of our continuous improvement planning here at the school, the announcement was made that when we return from the summer break, all classrooms will be SmartBoard® equipped. This innovative use of technology will enhance every aspect of our educational programming here at Molloy.

Other innovations include turning the Murphy Library into a “Research Center”. In addition, every teacher will have a laptop assigned to them. We will be completely renovating Chemistry Lab, moving it into the DeChairo Building. With this move and the reconfiguration of other space we will create two new classrooms within the existing building structure. This means more room for growth within the building.

Molloy will also be totally wireless when we return from summer break.

And the Band Played On

The Pipe Band marched in a number of St. Patrick’s Parades this season culminating in the walk up Fifth Avenue in the NY St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In the words of Jim Sheldon, it was cold in the waiting and warm in the walking… all 45 blocks! They showed the school colors and did our school proud. Congratulations to all!

Principal for a Day

Bill Morse and Dennis Winkler from the class of 1992 won the bid to become Principal for the Day yesterday. They were the highest bidders at the Brother Ron Marcellin Scholarship Dinner this year. Brother Roy gave them a day to remember as they worked their way around the school visiting with students and faculty, took a tour of duty in the cafeteria followed by a full walking tour of the facilities and a good visit with President Sherry at the end of the day.

I asked that they stop by the Alumni office to share their thoughts on the day. Upon reflection, they noticed many changes and yet saw the consistencies that we have maintained over our 50 years in Briarwood. They appreciated the discipline and dedication of the students and commitment of the faculty. In all, it was a great experience. We expect to see more of them in the future. Bill works in the IT industry and Brian works in corporate real estate.

Upcoming Events

St. Patrick’s Cathedral Mass – All of the details are finalized and the students are raring to go! All alumni, parents and friends of St. Ann’s and Molloy are invited to attend this celebration. Sign up on line to let us know that you will be coming and we will set aside space for you in the cathedral.

The Golf Outing

The date is coming up soon for the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic, and there are still corporate sponsorships available. Please sit with your management teams and arrange for one of your corporate entertainment activities to include a foursome at the outing. This year we will be inaugurating the John Gibbons Memorial Scholarship. All of the proceeds of the golf outing will go to support this scholarship. We need your support in order to make this a powerful launch for the Gibbons Scholarship.

St. Ann’s Communion Breakfast

Invitations have gone out and reservations are starting to come in for this annual reunion of St. Ann’s alumni. The office has heard from many St. Ann’s Stanners and we are looking forward to seeing many of them at the Mass and Communion Breakfast.

Class News and Notes

We had a number of recent alumni drop by as they visited the school.

Ashley Colletti ’05 attends Iona and is taking Psychology and Fine Arts.

Diana Trent ’07 attends Fordham, taking coursework in Social Work and Theater.

Scott Kuhner ’05 is at New Paltz taking Psychology and Women’s Studies.

When asked, “What is a Stanner?” these three come up with a few great lines… When you go to Molloy it is like being born into an accepting community of people with shared interests. You get to see life in a variety of ways, and the atmosphere is like – the bar on Cheers! – it’s a place where “everybody knows your name”. It is Home.

Henry Peng from the class of ’07 is off on an adventure this summer. He attends the University of Minnesota – The Carlson School, and is a business major. His commitment to service has taken on a new life at the school and he is pursuing the chance to participate in the Cancer Society’s Ride for the Cure, a cycling trip to the west coast. For more information and to support his effort please log on to the site at: www.hopkins4K.org

In Memoriam

Please remember Father John J. Cavanaugh, Class of 1941 in your prayers. We were recently notified of his passing in February of 2006.

Please remember William Geoghegan, Class of 1954. He passed away 4/21/07.

If you know of the passing of any Molloy Alumni or family members of alumni please notify our office with as much detail as possible. Each year at the reunion we ask take time to remember all of our Alumni and family by ringing the St. Ann’s Bell once for each member of our family who passed this year.
