Stanner E-News

Greetings from Molloy — Week Twenty-Six — Giving in this Time of Lent

From time to time I use this space to editorialize a bit. I have been working on a few projects tied to the various ways we give back to Molloy and I wanted to share some thoughts with you.

When we talk about Non Scholae – Sed Vitae, we are talking about being part of the Community of Stanners that numbers around 20,000. How do you participate in this area of our crest and tradition?

It all comes down to giving back to the institution that keeps our traditions alive. In this instance I am talking about giving in terms of the three T’s - Time, Talent and Treasure. Every week I see examples of today’s Stanners learning how to give.

Non Scholae - Sed Vitae

Time - The most precious gift is time. Once it is spent, it is gone forever… give of your time wisely. We constantly need volunteers for tasks large and small. By giving time, we do not need to hire others to do the work and the savings drop right to the bottom line. The Father gave His Son for thirty-three years here on earth and in return, He gave us eternal life.

Talent- This is an area where Stanners are MOST generous. From the team of Stanners that is evaluating the Building and Grounds needs for the future of this 50 year old building, to the core team that works the Stanner Games each and every year. More than just time, they are bringing their expertise to the table and offering it back to Molloy to endow it with Stanner Pride.

Another example of this is the annual Career Day when Stanners talk to Stanners about their future. That is Powerful! Please call John Sherry if you would be willing to discuss your career as an option on this Career Day – April 15th. As you can imagine, we have sufficient Lawyers and Financial Industry speakers. We are looking for those in Medicine, Education and any other walk of life that has provided well for you and your family.

Treasure - Finally, we ask that those who have treasure more than most, to consider giving to the various campaigns. As I pulled the most recent edition of the magazine together I spent some time with the Giving Report. It tells a great story of generous giving. We are currently in the midst of Phonathon season, and the Stanners for Life Capital and Endowment Campaign is also under way. In addition there are more than 40 named scholarships as vehicles for giving. Consider making a pledge or gift to any of the many opportunities we offer.

The Phonathon is Alive and Well – The first four nights of the Phonathon introduced 30 current Stanners to more than 1000 families and alumni this week. In all, more than $25,000. was raised in four nights.

Blood Drive

Like the Toy Drive, the Valentine’s Dress Down Day fundraiser and other philanthropic efforts at Molloy, the Blood Drive was a huge success. The school nurse, Kathy Forgione, coordinates with the student body, faculty and staff in this one-day blood drive at the school. At the end of the day the drive collected 169 pints of Whole Blood for use by the American Red Cross. We have all heard of the chronic blood shortage in the system, and this annual event teaches our students how to give this most precious resource. It is about giving in this time of Lent.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral Mass

You know you are spiritually alive when you invite the entire student population to go to Mass in celebration of your 50th Anniversary as a school and 99% hand in their permission slips – Yes! We are A Catholic Marist High School and on April 9th the entire City of New York will know that, too. We have invited more than thirty Stanner Priests to concelebrate this Mass along with Father Frank Shannon. Hopefully many will come to be part of our Stanner Community that day.

You are encouraged to join us. The Cathedral seats 2500 people, and we want it full of Stanner Pride. Pride in our Alma Mater. Pride in the Marist Tradition. And, Pride in our Faith. This is one day in 50 Years when we will take a couple of hours to give thanks for all we have received – Our teachers, our friends, our work and our families.

Sign up on line today! Let us know you are coming, bring a friend, classmate or family member and let us celebrate our Anniversary year in the most significant way. Mass is scheduled for 10:30 AM on April 9th. We will be piped in between 10:00 and 10:30 AM.

Dr. Harvey Awarded Diploma

The Stanner family has just grown by one more member. For more than fifteen years, Dr. Peter Harvey has been giving of his time as the school physician. He thought enough of this school that he sent his son Daniel here. Daniel is a Stanner from the Class of 2005. More than just an honorary diploma, Dr. Harvey has put in his full measure of time here at Molloy – Well over 600 days over his fifteen years. Dr. Harvey is an outstanding example of someone who represents the best in the Non Scholae – Sed Vitae tradition, and we welcome him as the newest member of our Stanner family.

Hall of Fame Dinner and Installation…

Each day I chat with some of the teachers about life here at Molloy. They tell different tales about their experience here at the school. This Hall of Fame Dinner will celebrate The Year of the Marist Educator at Molloy. Come, celebrate with us as we recognize five of our teachers for their commitment to the school Motto – Non Scholae – Sed Vitae!

Class Notes

Class of 1953 – Pat Gallagher, former brother, teacher at Molloy in the 60’s, and retired police chief called in to check on some of his classmates. In particular, he would like to connect with Warren Perez and Peter Cousseau. Pat went to St. Ann’s Grammar School and then went on to become a Marist Brother.

In Memoriam

Class of 1964 – the daughter of Gerard L. Weber wrote to inform us of the passing of her father on January 1, 2008. She mentioned that he was always so proud of his time at Molloy. She asked that we inform his classmates and that he be remembered in future Stanner Masses.

In your charity, please pray for the repose of the soul of Roger William Wilbeck, Father of Joseph, Class of 1994, John, Class of 1997, and Frank, Class of 2000.

Until next week - God Bless all Stanners!
