Reunions, Reunions, Reunions — It’s Celebration Time !
1948, 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003!

Every class has some reason to celebrate - from a recent Graduation from College to kick starting your career or even become grand or great-grandparent. Time marches on and each class is unique in their reason to celebrate. The class of 1968 is gathering to celebrate 40 years of one of the great hoax’s every played on the administration of Molloy — 1983 is getting together to celebrate their 25th Anniversary and the Class of 1948 is getting together because they can!

Whatever the reason, call your friends and classmates and bring a group back to Molloy! Our Mass of Remembrance and Medallion Ceremony will start at 6:00 PM followed by a cocktail party and an evening of food and beverages from our open bar, fun and friendship. There is much to see this time around as we celebrate the opening of our new Chemistry Lab, the New Windows and the Hall of Fame Wall exhibit.

The Harvey Fun Run — Recap

The Annual Harvey Fun Run was held on October 4th under blue skies and clear weather conditions. Approximately 225 people took place in the event with more than 150 runners. The picture file is available on-line.

Mr. Gambino gave out “special awards” in a tongue in cheek style celebrating the fact that this is a “political year”. His humor navigated the world of partisan politics and his wit won the day. All were satisfied with their awards. Chocolate, anyone?

A new trophy was presented for the first time this year. Named after and dedicated to Brother Bob Andrews for his years of service to the Track Community here at Molloy. The Brother Bob Andrews trophy was sponsored by Christian Limberg ’93, name plaques will be added each year honoring the male and female athletes who improved the most from year to year.

Brother Bob was most humble in his remarks after the Trophy was announced and presented to the gathering. He commented on what a privilege it has been to serve this community throughout his career. You could see in his eyes that he was remembering the thousands of students the athletic program at Molloy has helped throughout the years.

The recipient of this year Bob Andrews Trophy will be announced at the end of this school year.

Around the School

Approximately 160 Principals and Teachers from the area Catholic and Public Intermediate schools came to Molloy on Tuesday evening for dinner and a tour of the new Chemistry Lab. (Department of Mixology) We are just weeks away from the dedication of this new lab, and as you can see from the pictures, it is quite the showplace. If enthusiasm is any indication of the teacher’s interest in sending their students to Molloy, then the evening was a great success!

Faculty Spotlight — Mr. James Sheldon ’88

Mr. Sheldon has many credentials and titles as part of his background and training. They include; Science Teacher, Coach, E.M.T. for nine years, Stanner, and Lifelong Learner.

Born in Brooklyn in 1970, Jim started his academic career at P.S. 34 where he spent his first three years. His family, in their infinite wisdom sent him to St. Stanislaus Kostka School for the rest of his elementary and intermediate schooling. The most striking memory he has of that time was that he was the only non-polish student at the school. As we all know, he completed his High School experience at Archbishop Molloy High School, graduating in 1988.

One of his favorite memories of his time at Molloy was the trips the choirs took to perform at area conventions and events. For some reason the performance at the National Catholic Educators Association convention was most memorable. He also smiles when he talks about the many trips to Esopus for camps and retreats. “I could go to Esopus a trillion times and never tire of it.”

Jim completed his BA in Biology at Queens College, and began his teaching career here. He worked his way through Q.C. by working at the Greenpoint Savings Bank. While teaching at Molloy he completed his work for a Masters Degree in Science and Secondary Education from St. John’s University. He is currently in his 17th year as an educator at Molloy. When asked about being a Stanner and teacher at Molloy his comment was both humorous and insightful — “The characters and roles stay the same but the actors keep changing”. He went on to reflect, “when we were kids here we did cool and amazing things here at Molloy. Today’s students do different things that are just as cool and amazing”. This is part of the Molloy tradition.

Jim has served as Assistant Coach and Head Coach for the Hockey Team and as a drummer and Drum Major for the Archbishop Molloy Pipes and Drums. He claims that he has that position because “I can hold a straight face through all that noise”. When asked about not having a Hockey team this year he said, “give me 24 kids who can skate and know the game and I will put a team on the ice!” He would love to rebuild the team.

His vision of the future for Molloy includes; more physical plant renovations and upgrades, and additional curriculum innovations. This past year the Science Department has been instrumental in innovating new curriculum with Jim’s new Forensic Science Course and Mary Mallia’s Science Competition Program. In all, he envisions a bright future for the school.

St. Ann’s Corner

Class members from the classes of 1943, 1948, 1953 and 1958 — Our 50th Anniversary Class, have answered the call and will be attending their various reunions on November 1st. We look forward to greeting them through the St. Ann’s Courtyard entrance. Valet Parking will be available. Welcome home all Stanners!

Girl’s Varsity begins competing Nov 1st.
Boys Varsity just began practice this past week.

Introducing the Fund for Molloy

This fall we will introduce the Fund for Molloy (formerly known as the Annual Fund.) In our efforts to keep a Molloy education affordable for all our students, it becomes necessary to make up the difference (some call it “Bridging the Gap”) between what we charge for tuition and the costs to operate the physical plant, provide quality student and alumni programming for the Molloy community, and, of course, to supplement our scholarship offerings.

You will receive your Fund for Molloy solicitation letter in early November (Current Parents will receive theirs in February.) and many of you will be called by one of our student volunteers later in the month. We hope we can count on your support for this important yearly initiative. Our students and your alma mater are counting on you!

We need your opinions! The Office of Advancement is forming Alumni Roundtables (by decades - 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 00’s) to provide us with feedback and to help answer the question, “What does it take to connect (or reconnect) Molloy with its Alumni?” Initial meetings will be held in early December. Those who cannot participate in person will be “conferenced in”. Our first meetings will focus on the general questions listed above, while subsequent meetings will address more specific issues relevant to each decade.
