Stanner Players Announce “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”
December 11th, 12th, and 13th
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart.
The musical, inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251—183 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus and Mosterllaria, tells the story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class. The title derives from the line that vaudeville comedians often used to begin a story: “A funny thing happened on the way to the theater.”
The musical’s original 1962 Broadway run won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book. A Funny Thing has enjoyed several Broadway and West End revivals and was made into a successful film. It is a popular choice for school and community theatre.
The performance will be held in the theater in the DiChiaro building. Performances will be as follows:
| December 11th | 8:00 pm |
| December 12th | 8:00 pm |
| December 13th | 2:00 pm |
Ticket Prices are as follows:
| Adults: | $10.00 |
Friday Night Halloween Dance
Remember the dances at Molloy? Well they are nothing like the Halloween bashes that take place these days. Last year’s costumes were nothing short of amazing and this year may raise the bar to spectacular. Pictures will tell the tale when we post them in next week’s E-News… Have a safe and fun Halloween with your families and friends.
Faculty Spotlight — Mr. Kenneth Auer – Assistant Principal for Students

Kenneth Auer, who is currently assistant principal of Molloy, grew up in Levittown and went to Levittown Division. He described himself a student who was “more about baseball than academics” and played for Doug Robins. He went to CW Post from ‘89 to ‘93, where he received a BA in criminal justice. He has won many awards for baseball including leading the country for hitting doubles in his junior year of college. After college, Ken played in the minor leagues for the West Virginia Coal Sox.
Ken was asked to play major league baseball when the strike erupted and he refused to cross the picket line. This led to Ken on a different path.
He decided to go into education and became a permanent substitute teacher at his old high school. In ‘98 he came to work at Molloy, first as an administrative assistant for students, and then in ‘02 started teaching U.S. history to juniors. Ken enjoys his job as assistant principal and tries to uphold Molloy’s reputation for students being highly disciplined as well as learning self discipline. “I try my best to be fair and consistent,” said Ken. “I treat a student like an adult, until they stop acting like one.”
Ken and current Administrative Assistant of Students Ed Shannon make a great team. A new challenge that hasn’t been faced in the past is cyber bulling. “There is less confrontation in the halls, but more online,” said Ken. “If a student comes to me with a complaint I try my best to monitor the situation and teach kids that although you may not like someone, you should respect them.”
Ken feels there is a noticeable difference between working at a Catholic school versus public schools. “It’s a privilege to be at a school that cares so much about teaching kids good morals and values to carry throughout life,” said Ken. “It isn’t a right to be here, you have to earn it.” Ken can only find one drawback to his job, “We have so many great kids here and it’s just unfortunate that I can’t get to know all of them as well as I get to know others.”
As a pastime Ken plays the bagpipes and growing up played with the Nassau Police. He is still involved today in helping out with the pipe and drums band here at Molloy. He is happily married to his wife Kathleen and has two beautiful children, Mallory and Casey.

State Senator Addabbo visits Mr. Diorio’s Classes
City Councilman candidate Frank Gulluscio talks about City Government

Each year State Senator Joe Addabbo ’82 comes home to Molloy to enlighten the student’s in Mr. Diorio’s classes about the ins and outs of government with a number of political observations thrown in. This week he, and Frank Gulluscio, a candidate for the City Council in District 32 spent the better part of each session answering questions about life in public service. There are many Stanners serving in a wide variety of elective offices here and around the country. Fellow Stanner Peter Delucia ’84 has been on Joe’s staff for many years. Together they make a great constituent service team.

Joe Mendola ’80 is a candidate for the post of City Comptroller for the City of New York. After graduation from Molloy he went on to Fordham College and Columbia School of Law. He faces John Liu in the upcoming election.

Dave Aylmer ’72 stopped by to visit the school and checked out our new Chemistry Lab and many of the improvements made over the years. Dave’s career has taken him to Texas A&M for a PhD in Chemistry and to West Virginia as a Professor of Chemistry. Dave specialized in working with smaller four year colleges in their science department throughout his career. He reminisced with Mr. Sherry about his time at Molloy and St. John’s. He is back in NY now and re-connecting with old friends and friendly places.
Connecticut Gathering – A Success!

There was a small gathering of Stanners in Connecticut last Saturday at George ’78 and Lissa Seeberger’s home in Wilton. The weather was daunting to say the least but that did not stop seven Stanners from gathering to share stories and make new friends. It is always interesting to note that there are many instances where Stanners live in the same town, go to the same church and do not know each other. It happened last week. Within one town there were at least three Stanners sharing the same zip code with little or no interaction.
Of those in attendance, Jim Ferguson ’78 came up from Franklin Square to see his lifelong friend and classmate George. Jim’s impersonations of some of his former teachers were nothing less than spectacular. One might say that he missed his calling. George’s brother, Steven ’84 – a reunion year Stanner, is a Pharmacist, Dr. Leonardo Sclafani ’84, a Chiropractor with a practice in CT stopped by to share a few stories, and Peter Rubsam ‘85 and Paul Foshi ’82 were there as well. In all, the food was wonderful – and yes, we stood for lunch, the camaraderie just plain fun, and the networking for career day was spectacular.
Calling all Stanner Bowlers
Coach Vinny Leonardo stopped in the other day and asked that we put out the call for all Stanner Bowlers to “Lace Up” to Strike out Crohn’s & Colitis !!! Vinny’s grandson Tyler Cacippo has suffered from Crohn’s Disease since he was five year’s old.
The event is scheduled for Saturday November 14th at the AMF Sheridan Lanes, 199 E. Jericho Turnpike, from 8 pm to 11 pm. The cost is $35.00 per person and includes a hero with salads, ziti and soda… no bowling is included in this price. The bowling is $40.00 per person or $160.00 per four person team. Come out for a great Bowlers Reunion and support this fundraiser. It is important to the coach – and to Tyler.

Proud Grandpa Shares Pics
College Counselor Kerry Hughes couldn’t help but share this picture of his granddaughter, Claire. As you can plainly see, she gets every bit of joy she can out of life, not unlike her proud Grandpa.

One Final Look at Blood Manor – Samantha Pawlak’s ’05 Personal POV
There are only a few days left to experience the terror of Blood Manor, located at 542 W 27th St in the Chelsea area of Manhattan. Be sure to get there very early because the line will be long. Blood Manor is worth the wait though and it takes about 30 minutes to make you way through the rooms once inside.
You’ll be frightened by unexpected noises and grotesque actors within each impressive themed room. This is not for the weak hearted so make sure you bring someone to hold their hand! Each room seems real and is done like a professional horror movie set. The actors may talk to you or just follow you around to freak you out. Be ready for anything, from chainsaws to 3D paint on the walls!
Manager James Faro, a Stanner Alumni, tries to make sure Stanners are treated VIP and was kind enough to provide the school with discount tickets for $25, which are still available in The Office of Advancement, room 124. So don’t miss out.
