The 2009 Stanner Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

This year we will induct six new members into the Stanner Hall of Fame, and one individual will receive the Stanner Achievement Award. The Induction Ceremony will take place immediately following the Mass of Remembrance at this year’s Class Reunion Celebration on Saturday, November 7th.

The inductees for 2009 are:

thurston

John L. Thurston ’66, has had a successful 37 year coaching career and a loving family. He’s been married for 38 years to his wife Candice, has two daughters-Clancy Marshall and Corey Wulff-along with two grandchildren, Jack and Rhone. Thurston is also a 1970 graduate of Seton Hall in South Orange, NJ with a degree in government and economics. He is currently an assistant women’s basketball coach at Fordham University. While at Archbishop Molloy, Thurston was named Outstanding Student Athlete in 1966.

robert-j-reilly

Robert J. Reilly ’68 is an Assistant Dean at Fordham University School of Law in New York. He grew up in Forest Hills, Queens, NY and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham College and Juris Doctor Degree from Fordham University School of Law. He is active in several charitable and educational organizations, is married and has 3 young sons.

Dean Reilly began his legal career as Associate General Counsel at an international transportation equipment leasing company. After seven years of practice he returned to Fordham Law School as Assistant Dean where his responsibilities have included Student Affairs, alumni affairs, communications, external relations and supervision of the areas of continuing legal education and public programming. He served for three years (2000-2003) on the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board appointed by the Unified Court System of the State of New York.

mcguire

Michael C. McGuire ’81 has supported many of the activities hosted by the Stanner Alumni Association and has been an excellent corporate citizen and supporter of hometown events in Floral Park, NY. Michael is a private person and works behind the scenes to make many charitable events work like clockwork. He also served as chairman of the 2009 Stanner Golf Classic. This award is for Service to Community – Non Scholae Sed Vitae.

Fazio Brothers Construction – Gino A. Fazio ‘81 is a member of the School Directory and has faithfully served on the Buildings and Grounds Committee for a number of years. Gino and his committee are charged with the responsibility of maintaining the structural integrity of the school building. This can be a daunting task with a building that is over 50 years old.

Together with his brothers, John ‘87 and Gaetano ‘01 they have provided countless hours of planning, committee work with other Stanners and have overseen the work as only a Stanner could. Each one of them played a critical role in the planning, logistics, and execution of the work.

They have overseen the window replacement project, the building of the new Chemistry lab, the renovation of many infrastructure spaces in the school and most recently the renovation of the space created by the relocation of the old Chemistry Lab in to a newly re-purposed classroom and a technology classroom space. They also supervised the reconditioning of the entry way steps to present our building as a welcoming place for our students. Our winter months will be much more comfortable thanks to the HVAC work done this year by the buildings and grounds committee.

In addition to these inductees, we will be awarding a Stanner Achievement Award this year. Mrs. Mari Hart will be given this award for over 20 years of volunteer work with the Guidance Department. Also, Mari has worked with SMILE groups for students with divorced/separated parents. When Molloy went co-ed she began coming in twice a week just to make the co-ed groups work. A number of years ago, she was asked to serve on the SMILE Board of Directors. She was instrumental in the planning and execution of the 10th anniversary mass/dinner for Brother Leo Richard in May of 2005.

President’s Dinner Celebrates Stanner Generosity

The President’s Dinner was held this past week to celebrate and recognize those individuals who have donated more than $1,000.00 during the past year. Mr. Sherry and Br. Thomas Schady hosted the evening held at the Plandome Country Club. During the evening attendees heard from Mr. Sherry and watched a video about Molloy. A good time was had by all who braved the rain and cold to come out and celebrate their part in continuing the Stanner heritage.

When you receive the upcoming Fund for Molloy mailing, please consider the value of the education you received while you were here at Molloy or St. Ann’s Academy and commit to making this the best drive ever.

National Hispanic Recognition Program Announces Honorees

hispanic-awards

Archbishop Molloy is happy to announce that the College Board has chosen six of our students as 2009-10 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars (NHRP) or Honorable Mentions:

  • Nicholas Gliagias
  • Louis Lamia
  • Nicholas Merckling
  • David Otano
  • Samantha Translavina
  • Eric Treffeisen

The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. The students were selected from a pool of over 200,000 students who took the 2008 PSAT/NMSQT®/PAATM and identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino. Students recognized by the NHRP have achieved a minimum PSAT/NMSQT/PAA score for their region. Students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher are designated as Scholars, and those with GPAs of 3.0 to 3.49 as Honorable Mentions.

AHHH, Remember the PSAT’s?

The hallways were quieter than usual on Wednesday as our Sophomores and Juniors sat for the PSAT exams. This experience prepares our students for the SAT and ACT exams. The Sophomores take the exam as practice while the Juniors are starting down the college exploration road. Our Seniors are making their final choices and scurrying for letters of recommendation. After all, this is what being a College Preparatory school is all about.

St. Ann’s Corner — Request for Missing Stanner Information

Gregory Rienzo ’49 has been working to find classmates for the upcoming reunion. He would like to know if anyone has contact information for Ronald William Beck ’49. If you have any information please send it to ( cflood@molloyhs.org ) and we will forward the information on to Mr. Rienzo.

Bob White ’59 stopped in from the island of St Croix, US Virgin Islands to “visit the bad weather”. He attended the University of Colorado where he received a degree in Architecture and he later became the Mayor of Boulder, Co. He has worked on energy issues throughout his career. In 1973 he designed and built the first multi-family solar building in the US. One of his side passions at the time was building sailboats and sailing the Caribbean. He fell in love with St. Croix where he found a fabulous balance of geography and perfect weather. He is just now finishing the courtyard area in his new home. The courtyard includes artifacts that range in age over a 5,000 year period. Another historic restoration he has worked on involved a home connected with one of the first FBI cases on the island. He lives with his wife, Joanne, a dietician in the local hospital. His daughter and son enjoy life on the island when they visit.

Though the fire escapes at St. Ann’s Academy are a vivid memory, one that strikes him as surreal is the act of trying to high jump in the basement without hitting the ceiling. What he remembers most from his Marist and Jesuit education was the fact that “every question begs a question”. It has been the biggest single influence in his life. He was very impressed by the sense of discipline and the attentiveness of our students. Indeed, he is proud to be a Stanner!

Our very own Stanner cowboy, Henry “Hank” Beckman ‘59 took another of his summer adventure rides. He sent some pictures of his trip this year tracing the Rio Grand River to the headwaters. It took 10 days of hard riding and cutthroat trout for dinner every night. we were at an elevation of 13000 ft. Next year he plans to explore the headwaters of the green river that starts in the Wind River Range in WY. Go Stanners!
