A message from incoming President Richard Karsten, Class of ’81:

Greetings, Stanner alumni, family, friends, faculty and colleagues. I am pleased to introduce to you the next step in our efforts to best communicate with our extended Stanner family, a new interactive newsletter we’re calling “THE BEEHIVE.” Think of “THE BEEHIVE” as a bi-monthly opportunity to stay in touch with what’s happening in the Molloy community – announcements about upcoming events, a showcasing of the latest programs offered at school, and news about notable achievements by current Molloy students, faculty, and alums in the community at large.

In keeping with our alma mater’s over-arching motto Not for school but for life, let me take this opportunity to reiterate that while the faculty get to guide their students for four years, here at the Alumni Center, we take responsibility for you for the rest of your lives…

In my new capacity as school president, I hear a terrific “Stanner story” every day. Quite simply, Archbishop Molloy High School/St. Ann’s Academy would mean nothing in the community were it not for the example set by our alumni going forward, whether that means a career in service, business, health care, law enforcement, etc. Pick any field – odds are there’s a Stanner excelling in it!

We hope that you’ll think of “THE BEEHIVE” as a two-way communication. We want to hear about your Stanner stories, your notable achievements, birth announcements, impromptu reunion gatherings, and much more. We want to hear about how your Molloy experiences have shaped your view of the world today, how much a part of your daily lives they might be. More than an online newsletter, we hope “THE BEEHIVE” will become a dialogue, a conversation…

To that end, allow me to introduce Joseph Sommo, Class of 2003, who will be taking over the reins of this bi-weekly electronic blog. Joe’s cherished Molloy experiences are just seven years in the past at this point, and he re-joined the school this summer as the Alumni Communications Coordinator in our newly re-vamped Alumni Center. After achieving his “Stannerhood,” Joe earned a Bachelor’s degree in Media Studies at Queens College. Ready to step out into the world, he then took his ambitions and abilities to the big city, honing his writing and technical skills at a number of different media companies. He now returns to his alma mater to share those new media experiences with all of us here at Molloy in overseeing “THE BEEHIVE.”

Joseph Sommo, Class of 2003:

Our newsletter has been a success with many readers over the years, but our goal is never to be satisfied with the status quo. In rethinking our approach, we hope to convey our desire for change and improved communications on a regular basis. We’d like to provide you with information that is thorough, accessible, and much more interactive. We will strive to communicate interesting content with relevance and clarity to all of our readers. In the coming weeks you will see more changes to “THE BEEHIVE” as we continue to update our look and functionality. And beginning Friday October 15th, count on us arriving in your email inbox every two weeks. Our primary focus will remain constant: to best represent Molloy and its students as we move forward together throughout the school year, as a community, and as an extended family. We hope you’ll join us for the journey.

Matt Rizzotti ’04, one of baseball’s top prospects currently with a minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies organization, visited Molloy to chat with the Alumni Center staff and numerous faculty members. Matt updated everyone on his stellar season in the minors, where he compiled 144 hits, 17 home runs, 76 Runs batted in and a .343 batting average across three levels of competition. Matt visited coach Jack Curran on Molloy’s baseball field to help provide instruction during team practice. Matt is looking forward to an intense workout schedule in the offseason to sharpen his skills even further and perhaps get that all important call to the big show, Major League Baseball.

September 7th, 2010 marked the beginning of another ambitious academic year at Archbishop Molloy High School. The freshman class was the first to get acquainted as they stored their books in their lockers for the first time…after some trouble with their combinations of course. In the following days the sophomores began their time as “wise fools,” the juniors looked forward to their most challenging academic year to date, and the seniors took on their roles as mentors for all the underclassmen. The road to success is never easy, but it is important for our seniors to step forward as leaders and provide an example that can make the road more inviting.

Elsewhere, Br. James Vagan has been busy running the school bookstore. The line for books, clothing and supplies almost runs out to Manton Street early in the year, but Br. James is unwavering as he mans his post. Our faculty, administration and student volunteers did a wonderful job organizing textbook distribution, homeroom assignments and athletic tryouts during the first weeks of the school year. It takes a lot of preparation to run the show, and it’s important to recognize all the hard work that goes into making sure our students have the best chance to succeed this year and beyond. Thank you to everyone that helped kick off the school year with a bang.

<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1878" style="border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px;" title="Br.
Sports Updates

Athletic Director Mike McCleary has been coordinating the upcoming athletic year. Molloy has over 30 teams encompassing 13 different sports, all of which are very competitive and have many talented men and women participating throughout the school year. Teams have been in operation since late August as initial tryouts were held, formal practices and seasons have begun, and hopes are high for every team. In the upcoming season the girls’ varsity and junior varsity soccer teams will be defending division titles while the boys’ varsity soccer team will be defending their city championship.

Speaking of the defending city champion boys’ varsity soccer team, they have begun their season with a respectable 3-3 record, while the boys’ junior varsity soccer team is still undefeated at 3-0. The girls’ varsity soccer team began at 3-1 while junior varsity earned a 2-0-1 opening record. As mentioned earlier, both are defending NSCHSAA “A” Champions. Elsewhere the varsity volleyball team is 2-1. The above right photo of the varsity team was featured in the Forest Hills Times as the “Angle of the Week.” The junior varsity team started off at 3-0. The girls’ tennis team got off to a great start at 1-0 while the varsity baseball team earned a great 3-1 start. Junior varsity baseball tryouts are still being held. In Cross Country Running, junior Kathleen Woods ’12 set a new School Record with a time of 15.56.9. Congratulations, Kathleen. Good luck to all of Molloy’s athletes and coaches!

Numerous alumni, faculty and friends including Kevin Joyce ’69, Joe Smith, Rich Rodgers ’65 and Molloy Athletic Director Mike McCleary gathered at a local restaurant to reminisce and treat coach to a good time in honor of the milestone occasion. Jack, a Stanner Hall of Famer, has been coaching at Archbishop Molloy for over 50 years and is the winningest coach in New York State history. He has been an inspiration for his entire life and has led the way in shaping Stanners into successful athletes and individuals. Thank you, Coach, for all your hard work and dedication to the future of our students. Happy Birthday!

The 2009-2010 school campaign marked the end of over 40 years of teaching at Archbishop Molloy for Mr. Mark Lipset. During his tenure, which spans roughly 75% of the history of Molloy, Mr. Lipset taught Biology, Chemistry, Chemistry Honors, and Health. He resided as the Health Education Coordinator and led after school activities as the Intramurals Director and part of the Referees Association. He was also a big contributor to The Stanner and to the production of the Blue and White yearbook. Although he has ended his time at Molloy, he continues to teach part time at Nassau Community College. According to John Diorio, Mark Lipset “is a great teacher, has one of the driest senses of humor around, and is an extremely talented artist as well. He taught at Molloy for over 40 years and always worked extremely hard.” Thank you, Mr. Lipset, for your legendary service to Molloy.

Over the summer Frank Gambino ’74 and Hall of Fame Stanner Ray Mascolo ’73 teamed up to make a music video for America’s Homeless Vets. Ray has been working to help the homeless veterans on Long Island. Frank provided his musical talents in creating the song and lyrics. The music video can be found on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yohs6viGXb8.
Archbishop Molloy President Richard Karsten ’81 recently bumped into former W.O.Y.C. dock master Jack Nolty ’48 at an Oakdale community kid’s fishing contest. Jack shared stories with Ryan Karsten ’13 about Esopus and playing ice hockey with Br. Aquinas on the frozen pond. Jack reminisced about summers at Esopus where Br. Linus made him responsible for “puttying” the hundreds of window panes in the mansion. Jack was excited about an upcoming trip with his son-in-law to Green Bay for a football game.

Non scholae sed vitae

Molloy students learn early on that there is no room for a lazy attitude. Upon graduation Stanners are prepared and motivated, ready for the next step in their young academic careers. In the case of Dorina Lleshi ’08, it has been quite a natural transition. Dorina recently visited the Alumni Center and shared stories about her recent independent study in Ghana. Currently attending Cooper Union, Dorina was inspired by her professor, Mr. Toby Cumberbutch, to travel to Jirapa, Ghana for 8 weeks for an “energy audit.” Dorina recorded data on the current use of fire wood for energy. Knowing current trends in the usage of fire wood helps to determine how much energy could be available in the future in Jirapa, located in northern Ghana. In groups of two she traveled the city talking to families and getting direct testimonials. Dorina studied specific energy usage in rainy and dry seasons as well because they are one of the most important variables that affect her group’s research. Dorina also reminisced about the World Cup tournament as Ghana defeated the United States while she was there. She described it as quite a big party.

Dorina credits Mr. Sheehan as her biggest inspiration at Molloy, saying “he told me to go out and sit in the uncomfortable” as a way to experience the real world at large. She also mentioned Ms. Mary Pat Gannon, and Mr. Chris DeSarno as examples that hard work does pay off. Dorina also recognized Br. Regis, who she described as “the ears” for her words, while he himself offered “words of wisdom.” Dorina is pursuing a major in chemical engineering and a bio-medical engineering minor.
A message from incoming President Richard Karsten, Class of ’81:

Greetings, Stanner alumni, family and friends, faculty and colleagues. I am pleased to introduce to you the next step in our efforts to best communicate with our extended Stanner family, a new interactive blog we’re calling “THE BEEHIVE.” Think of “THE BEEHIVE” as a bi-monthly opportunity to stay in touch with what’s happening in the Molloy community – announcements about upcoming events, a showcasing of the latest programs offered at school, and news about notable achievements by current Molloy students, faculty, and alums in the community at large.

In keeping with our alma mater’s over-arching motto Not For School, But For Life, let me take this opportunity to reiterate that while the faculty get their students for four years to make an impression, here at the Alumni Center, we take responsibility for you for the rest of your lives…

In my new capacity as school President, I hear a terrific “Stanner story” every day. Quite simply, Archbishop Molloy High School/St. Ann’s Academy would mean nothing in the community were it not for the example set by our alumni going forward, whether that means a career in service, in business, health care, law enforcement, etc. Pick any field – odds are there’s a Molloy grad excelling in it!

We hope that you’ll think of “THE BEEHIVE” as a two-way communication. We want to hear about your Stanner stories, your notable achievements, birth announcements, impromptu reunion gatherings. We want to hear about how our Molloy experiences have shaped how you look at the world today, how much a part of your daily lives they might be. More than a blog, we hope “THE BEEHIVE” will become a dialogue, a conversation…

Ready to step out into the world, he then took his ambitions and abilities to the big city, honing his technical skills at a number of different media companies. He now returns to his alma mater to share those new media experiences with all of us here at Molloy in overseeing “THE BEEHIVE.”

Joseph Sommo, Class of 2003:

Our blog has been a success with many readers over the years, but our goal is never to be satisfied with the success we achieve. In altering our approach, we hope to convey our desire for change and improved communications on a regular basis. We’d like to provide you with information that is thorough, accessible, and much more interactive. We will strive to communicate interesting content with relevance and clarity to all of our readers. In the coming weeks you will see more changes to “THE BEEHIVE,” as we continue to update our look. And beginning Friday October 15th, count on us arriving in your email inbox every two weeks. But our primary focus will remain constant: to best represent Molloy and its students as we move forward together throughout the school year, as a community… and as an extended family. We hope you’ll join us for the journey.

Congrats to the 2010 graduates! They are now official Stanner alumni. This past Monday, they returned to celebrate at the Senior Breakfast and to pick up their diplomas. Every 2010 graduate received a DVD made by their fellow classmates. Some also won raffle prizes of Stanner Alumni hats, shirts, and mugs. President John Sherry greeted them, and thanked them for making him an honorary member of their graduating class as well. Brother Pat gave the invocation and Brian Klimas served as MC for the event. Special thanks to Ms. Longerano, Ms. Gannon, and Mrs. Solari, who organized and decorated for the event. Next week is the last day of classes. Good luck to all students taking their Regents Exams.

I hope everyone has a great summer!

Brother Leo Richard Stanner Relief Fund Established

In keeping with the spirit of Brother Leo’s legacy of helping those in most need and in honor of his memory, we have established the Brother Leo Richard Stanner Relief Fund. The purpose of this fund will be to make funds available to help students and their families through some of the rougher economic challenges they experience. These funds will be administered by the President of the School.

We have decided to honor Leo’s memory in this way rather than as a scholarship fund to let future generations of Stanners experience his generous spirit. Please click here to make a donation to the fund. Help keep Brother Leo’s legacy alive at Molloy.

Leo was known for his many small acts of kindness and sharing. If he helped you at any point in your time here at Molloy or later in life, take five minutes, make a donation today. With 10,000 recipients of the E-News every week, we can create a substantial fund if just half were to make a modest donation today. Leo never hesitated, why should you?

Vic and Mary Zupa Win Trip to Ireland… Share Pictures

Earlier this week we received word from the Zupa’s about their trip to Ireland. They won the trip at the annual Brother Ron Marcellin Scholarship Fundraiser. Mary sent this note along with the pictures.

“Hi Lou. I just sent e-mails to George and Jack expressing our gratitude for such a special gift! You can’t imagine how beautiful the Castle is and the area it is located in! The flight crew on Aer Lingus is cheery and helpful as well as the Castle staff! The rooms we had and the view of the sea will long be a special memory until we return. Pictures will follow soon; I just wanted to let you know how it all went and to say Thanks, Lou. Mary.”

Around the School

Academic Award Night a Resounding Success

It is always rewarding to see the results of your work and this is never more evident at Molloy than on Academic Awards night. The Administration celebrated Stanners performance this past year at this annual event. Mr. Sherry, Sr. Elizabeth, Mr. Jennings and Mr. Auer all participated in honoring the students. Brother Thomas was unable to attend due to the passing of his brother.

According to President Sherry; “It is always a pleasure to see how many students qualify for the various awards knowing how high the standards are.”

And, as always, the cookies were GREAT!

Eight Students Win ACE Scholarship Awards

The following students were the ACE Mentor Program Scholarship Winners for 2010. Louis Lamia (engineering), Denisa Lleshi (civil engineering), Andrea Martinez (engineering), Alexia Sanchez (architecture), Olivia Sell (electrical engineering), Andy Singh (civil engineering), Chiing Ye (civil engineering), and Jackie Vargas (architecture)- won scholarships totaling $27,000. ACE is an acronym for architecture, construction, and engineering.

The program’s mission according to their Web site “is to engage, excite and enlighten high school students to pursue careers in the integrated construction industry through mentoring; and to support their continued advancement in the industry though scholarships and grants.”

ACE is a unique partnership among industry professionals who work together to attract young people to their professions. Industry professionals volunteer to become mentors to high school students in order to introduce them to the professions and encourage them to pursue studies and careers in these fields. In return, the industry gets a much-needed boost of new talent..

The students are put into teams with their industry mentors to emulate an actual design team, and are guided through a mock design. Mentors guide the students as they work towards a final project, introducing them to the careers, industry vocabulary, and various roles companies play in the construction industry. Molloy’s ACE coordinator is Mr. Whalen, in our Science Department.

Math League Scores Big Across the Board

Archbishop Molloy High School’s Math League placed 20th in the 2010 Collaborative Problem-Solving Contest, a national math contest administered by National Assessment & Testing (http://www.natassessment.com). The students had a week to do fifteen unique, intricate problems. The questions ranged from math based riddles to much harder ones. Molloy was commended for scoring the highest on the most difficult question, number 11, which asked to determine how many powers must be added together to result in a perfect square.

Adele Solari shared this additional information about the League with us: “This was a banner year for Math League! Our Captains, Patryk Perkowski and Christopher Hwu, were always on the lookout for something new. The Varsity Team, along with selected juniors, participated in three major contests. The first, the American Mathematics Competition was a 75 question test. Our team did well, with senior Louis Lamia advancing to the next level, the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. Next, the team challenged themselves with a real life problem sponsored by the Moody Corporation. This year’s topic was the US Census. The teams worked from 9 am to 7 pm on a Saturday, to research and present a major paper on the topic. It was indeed a challenge!

Our Junior Varsity Team members also did extremely well this year. Junior Karen Zhou came in 1st place Nationally in the Algebra 2 Contest, and Freshman Patrick Cen was a 1st place winner in our division for Algebra 1. Everyone worked very hard this year and it paid off.

Congratulations to all!

Persistent Stanners Prepare for Taylor Swift Concert – And it Paid Off!

These Stanners learned the power of persistence last week. A group of freshmen girls wanted some special treatment at the recent Taylor Swift concert and planned a 60 day campaign of classroom posters, a scrapbook of pictures and sent it off to her manager. You see, they had heard that Taylor takes time to meet her fans after a concert when they have done some genuine work prior to the event. Well, all that planning paid off. Two of our best and brightest received back stage passes and had their picture taken with Taylor.

And now, the rest of the story… you see, Taylor Swift comes from Hendersonville, TN where I live when I am not at Molloy. In fact, she dated my next door neighbor, Drew while in High School… and then she wrote a song about him… small world, isn’t it?

Steve Zavoluk ‘64 spent time with science students in Mary Mallia’s Engineering and After School Science group about a very timely topic… petroleum engineering. With all that is going on with off shore drilling these days, the room was packed with students interested in the work that petroleum engineers do, and what they might be working on right now to correct the problems with the BP platform accident. They also discussed alternative fuels and green technology.

Patrick Murphy ’82 stopped by while in town for his niece’s Confirmation. He stopped by to visit with Coach Curran and to take a quick walk down memory lane. After Molloy he attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. He resides in Florida and continues to tour the world in his work.

Have You Seen this Man?

Corporations all across America are looking for this man. Rob LaRosa is a member of our IT staff here at Molloy. He has been a great asset to the team and last weekend received his BS in Management Information Systems from St. John’s University. Congratulations to Robert for all of his hard work here and at St. John’s.

2010 Stanner Hall of Fame Inductees

Candidate Biographies

Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. ’82

Joseph P. Addabbo has been described as someone who embodies the Stanner motto, “Not for school, but for life.” Joe has been a consistent guest speaker in Mr. Diorio’s classes through the years. His insights about the functioning of the legislature, political structures, and the needs of the public, came from his father, the late Congressman Joseph P. Addabbo. For a while he practiced law at Addabbo and Greenburg, Esq.’s in Forest Hills. He then decided to run for New York City Council and won the election in 2001. He served in the City Council for seven years representing the 23rd Assembly District, being re-elected twice in 2003 and 2005.

He was the key sponsor of the Adopt-A-Park law. As Chair of the New York City Council Civil Service and Labor Committee, Senator Addabbo fought for the health needs of 9/11 first responders, as well as retiree rights, fair labor practices and workplace safety. He is now in his first year as a senator representing the 15th District. Addabbo is married to the former Dawn Puricelli and has two daughters, Alexis and Arianna.

Nominated by:

Dennis J. Vellucci (Department of English, taught Addabbo as a student and has followed his political career)- “He has constantly demonstrated the same intelligence, deliberation, honesty and integrity that characterized him even when he was a high school sophomore… What has impressed me about Joe is his commitment and loyalty to his constituents, always putting their needs and concerns before any political agenda of his own.”

Michael A. Contino ’68- “As city councilman he fought for his district, resulting in increased services, restoration of our parks, and attention to constituents’ ’’ concerns… now he serves as New York State Senator with the same attention to detail… he has never forgotten his roots.”

Brother Leo Richard, FMS

Brother Leo has been described as someone who has impacted many lives over the 30+ years he served at Molloy. He was a shot put coach in the mid 1960’s and originated the SMILE program to help boys build self-esteem and live life in a loving responsible way. He influenced many people to continue helping kids and God’s work: the late Dr. Patrick Murphy, the late Dr. Robert Englert, Father Edward Doran, Jim Hoey, Jim Murphy, Shila Murphy, Mary Michels (founder of Big Brother group), and Mari Hart (a 2009 Stanner Achievement Award honoree). He also worked closely with Br. Regis and the late Br. Ron Marcellin. SMILE continues today through Chris Dougherty, who was a peer group leader of Br. Leo’s in 1991. Many teachers and counselors try to implement his methods and teachings. Leo also played a big part in the 1989 Excellence Award that was bestowed on Molloy after the SMILE program was observed during visits, according to Br. John Klein. Brother Leo Richard was previously honored with the Stanner Achievement Award.

Nominated by:

Joseph Egan ’89- “Leo was like a surrogate father to me… If the 2005 memorial held at school was any indication of support, it is apparent that his memory remains strong today in the minds of many alumni.”

Paul Franco ’91- “Learning life lessons in that group SMILE such as leadership, devotion, camaraderie, and deep friendship has translated into every aspect of my life. The spirituality Br. Leo exuded allowed for a deeper commitment to my beliefs as a Christian. For that I am eternally grateful.”

Brother Dan O’Riordan ’85

Br. Dan has been described as a humble man, dedicated to serving Christ without ever asking for something in return. He connected with students, drove them to be more than they thought possible, and embedded a sense of community and service to others. He made volunteering exciting, daring and most of all successful. He was well known for taking students to Esopus and to the Lourdes Trip in France. Br. Dan started having students volunteer at the Briarwood Shelter, which still continues today. He also got the clothing, food, and Christmas toy drives started. The numbers of coats, toys or food given to the needy since those early days are immeasurable.

The Salvation Army has granted him National Recognition for his valiant volunteering efforts and donations. One great accomplishment of Br. Dan’s was how he revived a small Catholic high school called Bishop Donahue in West Virginia. Br. Dan spent a lot of time helping the school get back on its feet and donated many supplies for its students and faculty. After getting an alumnus to donate, they were able to rebuild the school’s building. This couldn’t have been possible without Br. Dan’s tireless efforts. He also worked a lot in a soup kitchen that has since expanded into a career center. This helped people with no other opportunities develop their working skills. Br. Dan is currently Director of Development at Roselle Catholic in NJ. He taught at Roselle and has been honored in their Hall of Fame as well.

Nominated by:

Paul Franco ’91 (former teacher) – “His enthusiasm, deep conviction to service and his magnetic personality drew me to him immediately… Ask any student that has worked with or known Br. Dan and each one will immediately have a smile on their face and tell you some wild story about helping. It always ends in success for those in need.”

John J. Hargrove ’60

Judge Hargrove has dedicated himself to the CARE (Credit Abuse Resistance Education) Program, which is a financial literacy program for high school students, making people aware of the dangers of credit abuse. For his service to CARE and launching it into a national program, he was honored with a proclamation naming an “Honorable John J. Hargrove Day” by the mayor and city council of San Diego in 2008. John has been married to his wife Jan for 42 years; they have four grown children- David, Kristin, Kelly and Katie.

Nominated by:

John Hummins, PhD (classmate)- provided most of this biography

Robert Urso, Professor (classmate/college roommate)- “John didn’t come from a privileged background… he used his small boat to clam the waters near Smithtown to pay his way through high school. He never complained and was proud of being a hard worker.”

Brother Luke Martin Reddington (teacher at St. Ann’s)- “…clearly remember him as an outstanding student and fine young man.”

Kevin Schwab ’99 wrote in this weekend to let us know that he is opening in “ANIMAL CRACKERS”, a Marx Brothers show, in Forest Hills. The Parkside Players are proud to present the second play to feature the Marx Brothers! When a celebrated painting goes missing from Mrs. Rittenhouse’s fancy house party in honor of African explorer, Captain Spalding, her guests set out to find the thief in a series of madcap antics and exploits. Based on the original Marx Brothers Broadway hit and film classic, this adaptation of Animal Crackers is an outrageous, rollicking, laugh-out-loud musical comedy. Featuring the reprisal of Parkside’s own Marx Brothers: Kevin Schwab as Groucho (for which he won the Best Actor award from The Josephine Foundation in 2008), Pete Mele as Harpo, Bill Meany as Chico and Valerie G. Keane in the role made famous by Margaret Dumont. Ray Bonèt returns to direct after being nominated in 2008 for his work on “The Cocoanuts’! Don’t miss it!

Florida Stanner Reports on Oil Spill in the Gulf Region

Last night, I went to a meeting organized by The Department of Environmental Protection. Our county officials, the mayor of Destin, our state senator and a representative of British Petroleum were there. Many business owners, charter boat captains and residents also attended the meeting.

At the meeting, we were briefed on the impact of the oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico and on our local waters and beaches. I was pleased to see the commitment for preventative measures by our local leaders and our residents. Since Destin’s economy is dependent on tourists, there is a strong contingent that will do anything to protect our beaches and way of life.

While there is still uncertainty in the final result of the situation, it appears that the oil slick will mostly affect the waters and coastline from Texas and Louisiana to Mobile, AL. The western-most part of the Florida Panhandle at Pensacola is less likely to be environmentally affected. The impact on Fort Walton Beach, Destin and Panama City is mostly financial. The potential visitors are concerned from TV coverage that the beaches won’t be usable… a very remote possibility.

Although I am relieved that Destin should be fine, I am very upset about the long term effects of the slick on our neighbors in Louisiana. They simply cannot afford to go through another major misfortune. I hope our government will give them more help than it did with Katrina. I hope your prayers include our neighbors to the west who work so hard to make ends meet.

We wish all Stanner Moms a happy and restful Mothers Day. This is the one day a year when we should take the time to celebrate the endless hours of caring and being there that mothers do every day – those rides to school and sporting events, cooking all those special meals and listening to endless stories about life – especially those teenage experiences.

Thanks, Mom for all you do.

Jim Kinnier – Stanner Golf Classic was Amazing!

Jim Kinnier, Joe Smith, Jim Kelly and the entire Golf Committee should be walking with Stanner Pride this week. The Golf outing was a huge success! And how about the weather – liquid sunshine in the morning – golf by 1:00 PM… talk about your powers of persuasion, you should have seen Maria Ford in action. Both courses cleared up enough for everyone to get in a terrific brunch and a full round of golf followed by a cocktail hour and dinner to be remembered. Of course, former Chairmen and Honorary Chairmen were around to support the efforts and to watch Chairman Kelly and Honorary Chairlady Anne Lonergan receive their respective blue and green blazers.

The two new John Gibbons Scholarship recipients were introduced and Niamani Morrisson had the Stanner audience spellbound as she thanked them for their generosity of spirit. Rarely have I seen an eighth grader with this much poise. Dan Ponce and Niamani will know they are supported from their first day at school based on the response of the audience.

The evening ended with the pulling of the raffle tickets. And the winners are:

Rich Saracino ’73 — 1st Prize — 7 Day Caribbean Cruise for Two

Around the School

AP Testing has begun

It’s that time of year when the pressure to perform is in the air. Students took their time honored seats in the Curran Gymnasium and waited for the official start of the testing period. All in all they looked prepared and seemed eager to get on with the task at hand. With graduation less than a month away, seniors are getting ready for the prom and all of those year end activities – parties, fun and even attending class now and then. All in all, their time is short and before you know it we will be adding another 400 members to the Stanner Alumni Association.

Boy’s Step Team scores Big in Regional Competition – Takes First Place!

The Archbishop Molloy Boys Step Team has won 1st place in 3 out of 5 competitions. They will go on to represent NYC in the National Step Finals in Harrisburg, Penn. on May 29th. They have been designated the “Best Step Team in NYC”. The Girls Step Team won 2nd place in CHSSA at Christ the King on April 17th. Congratulations to Anne Lonergan and both of her teams…

To be sure you’re included, send your contact information (including your year of graduation) to Alumni4SSS@aol.com. If you’d like to work with the Association in getting this event off the ground, creating and/or maintaining a website or an e-newsletter, please let us know when you send us your contact information. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Stanner Dan McGrath ’01 won last Sunday’s Long Island Marathon, finishing in 2 hours, 29 minutes, 44 seconds.

“It was exciting to win,” McGrath said of the race, in which runners compete at three different distances. “The Long Island Marathon is a great local event for competitive local runners — as well as other recreational runners — to challenge themselves over 10K, the half-marathon and the marathon.”

McGrath started running during his freshman year at Archbishop Molloy High School, and went on to La Salle University and Notre Dame Law School, where he graduated in 2009. He was sworn in as an attorney just three weeks ago, and will begin working in the litigation department of Kelley Drye & Warren’s Manhattan office in September. Congratulations on all counts, Dan!

Reports have been coming in all week about the LI Marathon – Dan was not the only stellar Stanner in the running…

Kenny Anderson ’89 was the guest speaker at a recent Daily News High School Basketball event. He met up with fellow Stanner Kyra Aloizos ’10. He was overheard to say how he was glad Molloy was not co-ed during his years otherwise he wouldn’t have done so well!!!

George Ruotolo ’68 became the newest member to Ramapo College’s Board of Trustees. George is chairman and CEO of Ruotolo Associates Inc., a fundraising and communications firm for philanthropic organizations. His experience encompasses annual development, capital campaigns, planned giving, marketing and public relations. He resides in Edgewater, New Jersey with his wife, Joanne. They have three grown children.

Request for Prayers – this week I experienced a natural disaster first hand. I have lived in Nashville, TN for nearly 30 years, and this is the first time the Cumberland River has flooded the region. It rained for three days straight and the water near my daughter’s home rose more than 50 feet from its normal level. She was blessed as only the crawlspace under her home was affected. Hundreds of families lost everything. Please keep all those affected by this and other natural disasters in your prayers this week.

In Memoriam

We have received word this week from Don Sommers about the passing of his brother Tom Sommers ’64. Tom was also the uncle of Katherine Sommers ’10.
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Bernard Woods. He was the father of Bernard Woods ’79, Grandfather of Brian Woods class of 2011& Kathleen Woods class of 2012.

Thanks for the Memories

My journey started three years ago when Mr. Sherry asked me to organize a 50th Anniversary celebration for Molloy. I accepted the position as Director of Alumni Relations and initiated my personal weekly blog – the Stanner E-News. It was intended to provide Stanners with an insider’s view of what takes place at Molloy in a typical week. With the help of Tom Harrison, CJ Mallia and others, we structured the weekly e-mail and posted the E-News so that you could follow this journey. Since then, a lot has happened. From humble beginnings – approximately 1,800 e-mails with very few pictures – we now send out the E-News to more than 10,000 Stanners each week.

As time passed, we redesigned the Web site, combined our magazine and annual report, and, under the direction of Mr. Sherry, created a world class Hall of Fame exhibit. Those are just some of the behind the scenes activities that have hopefully brought new life to the Stanner Alumni Association. The results of these efforts have borne fruit. Attendance at Alumni functions is up, we had a successful “Stanners for Life” endowment campaign, and we have added many new donors to The Fund for Molloy, our annual fund program.

About a month ago I was informed that my contract would not be renewed. As with all change, this is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, I will return to my life and family in Nashville to reclaim the exalted role of “Poppy.” As for employment, I will return to my consulting practice, working with accounting firms interested in expanding their marketing and personnel development programs. All that having been said, I will miss this. The faculty, the students and most of all, the every day reinforcement of one simple fact – Non Scholae Sed Vitae is much more than a motto – it represents true commitment, a way of life.

I will walk the halls and visit with alumni over the next four weeks with new eyes. Looking at our seniors and wondering – how many of them will maintain their commitment to Molloy? I will look at the building and see the changes that will ensure our physical presence for years to come, and I will say goodbye to faculty and friends, confident that the institution is in good hands. When my replacement is named I trust you will be there for him/her in the same way you have supported me.

God Bless all Stanners!
Charlie Flood ‘68

Stanner Communion Breakfast Fed the Soul and Body

The rain and chilly weather could not dampen the enthusiasm of the fifty Stanners and Stanner family members who joined with Father Frank Shannon ’76 to celebrate our spiritual heritage. Many of the “Men from St. Ann’s Academy” joined with representatives from our administration, faculty and from every decade of Stanner graduates to celebrate. It was interesting to watch how stories were exchanged over breakfast, how the class of ’52 immediately took over one corner of the faculty cafeteria and, when it was all over, how we had deeper sense of community as Stanners.

Perhaps next years attendance will grow to include many more from each of the constituencies represented this year. As we look forward, let us always remember from whence we came.

Golf Outing Sold Out

Maria Ford is happy… and trust me, that is a good thing. The golf outing is sold out! Auction items are all present and accounted for – Yankee’s and Giant’s tickets, mountain homes, TV’s and yes, even more golf!

To those who were able to donate the auction items, to Joe Smith and AJ Power for managing the raffle ticket sales with our current students, and to Jim Kinnier and the entire golf committee, THANKS – for teeing us up for one of the best golf outings on LI.

Call for Freshmen Camp Counselors – E-Mail Correction

Molloy Freshman Camp is looking for some alumni to help out at the camp this summer. Female alumnae are especially needed to assist the new freshman integrate themselves into Molloy Society. If interested, email jraeihle@molloyhs.org or jsheldon@molloyhs.org as soon as you can so we can begin to build the summer program.

Around the School

Spring Concert

As we said recently, Spring is in the air and in honor of that theme, Molloy put on its best arts display ever. The Curran Gymnasium was decorated with student artwork, the stage was set up for our band, and the school was alive with the sound of music. Students sang and performed for parents and friends Thursday night and from all reports, you would have thought you were on Broadway with the talent on display.

Non Scholae Sed Vitae

Elizabeth “EJ” Dreyer ’06 stopped in last week with some wonderful news. She has earned the title of Valedictorian at Molloy College, and will be delivering her speech at graduation. Her degree is in Nursing. Immediately after graduation she will take a well deserved break as she prepares to take on the national boards for her license. We are confident that this will not present too large a challenge for her. Once licensed, she hopes to work with infants in a hospital setting. Pediatrics was the rotation that she enjoyed the most while in training. Congratulations E.J., and may your healing hands be blessed as you start your career.

Nicole Ambrose ’09 stopped by this week to say hi. She is home from Louisville where she had a great first year in the Sports Management Program there. She is looking forward to having fellow Stanner Russell Smith join her there next year. We discussed her classes, visits from Mom, and the world’s best Skyline Chili.

In Memoriam

Please keep as in your prayers, Elizabeth Kearns, the wife of Thomas Kearns ’54.

St. Ann’s Corner – Remember When?
Who are these boys from St. Ann’s?
Brother Roy would like to know…

The photo above appeared in the Bulletin of Studies of the United States Province from November 1953. It was taken as more than 50,000 persons assembled in the Polo Grounds on Sunday, October 11, to participate in the annual prayer crusade for missions and vocations sponsored by the New York Archdiocesan Union Holy Name Society. His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, presided and was the celebrant of Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament which brought the afternoon’s ceremonies to a close.

The religious ceremonies got under way at 3 p.m. with a procession in which more than 400 members of the hierarchy, Monsignori and priests participated. This was followed by another procession composed of 500 children of grammar school age who were dressed in the garb of various Religious that serve in the Archdiocese of New York. Seven third graders from St. Ann’s Academy represented the Marist Brothers and were truly Little Brothers of Mary. Some of them may have graduated Molloy in 1962 or 1963. Some left St. Ann’s when the move took place.

Stanner Players Present – The Dining Room by A.R. Gurney

A.R. Gurney’s The Dining Room is an interesting script to read and an even more fascinating play to watch. It is a play set in a single dining room. This is a real dining room, by the way, not just a room attached to the kitchen where the table is set up. This is the sort of room in which a long wood table is accompanied by a matching hutch, buffet, and beautifully carved chairs. It’s the type of room in which manners are of the utmost importance and the rules of behavior are as uncompromising as the crystal of the water glasses.

The Stanner Players cast of 16 will create a total of more than 50 characters during this performance. Come; watch the transformation and the shifts in time. Performances are scheduled for April 23rd and 24th at 8:00 PM and on Sunday April 25th at 2:00 PM. Bring your entire family for a great evening of entertainment.

Stanners Around the World

Chris Dougherty ’91 wanted the world to see the three best photos from his group’s recent trip to the North Sea – they gathered by a traditional windmill, a portion of the Berlin Wall and for a light dinner – as Vikings! . It would appear that a great time was had by all. According to Chris the pictures were delayed by volcanic ash – a likely story.

Non Scholae Sed Vitae

Brother Leo Richard’s Niece and Family visit Molloy

You never know who is going to walk in the door on any given day. One of our surprise visitors this week was Melissa Morris Danisch, the niece of Brother Leo Richard. She brought her family along for this trip down memory lane. Joe 15, Maggie 13 and Jack 9 – in the Red Sox jersey visited the school, looked through yearbooks and heard stories about Brother Leo… she remembered the mass held for the 10th Anniversary of his passing. She was glad to see that the SMILE program was still active and that the Cave was still a part of Molloy.

Craig Katinas ’93 was going through his Christmas pictures and found this one from the Bishop’s luncheon. The Fazio Brothers were honored this year by the Bishop. There were many Stanners and Stanner families in the room. Pictured L-R are Craig, the Fazio brothers, Gino ’81 and John ’87, John Sherry ’61, BJ Duffy ’85, and Charlie Flood ’68.

In Memoriam

Jeff Gallagher ’88 stopped in to let us know that his aunt Elizabeth passed away this week. Please keep this family in your prayers this weekend.

A Thought for the Week

This week marked the passing of Dr. Dorothy Height at the age of 98. She was President of the National Council of Negro Women for many years and in her later years became the chairwoman of this organization. I had the privilege of working with Dr. Height on two different publishing projects for the National Council of Negro Women in the 1980’s. As one of the leading civil rights activists from the 60’s she had some amazing tales to tell, and she told them well and often. Her favorite quote when it came to getting things done was “If the time is not ripe, we have to ripen the time.” As we go about the business of life this week, take a minute to “ripen the time” for something that needs to be done. For, if you wait for the ripe time, it may never come.

Spring Fever Precedes Spirit Week

The flowers are in full bloom and senioritis has really begun to set in….The rest of the students are also suffering from a major case of spring fever. Hopefully, next weeks Spirit Week festivities will help everyone to release a little energy and get focused on the run to the finish line. There are many events planned, a full slate of regular sporting events on the schedule and at the end of the week the Stanner Players will present – The Dining Room.

Stanner Players Present – The Dining Room by A.R. Gurney

Last fall the members of the Lantern Club planted bulbs as part of their after school club activity. This week they were in full bloom, and the members spent time in St. Ann’s Courtyard celebrating the new growth and beauty of their efforts.

Stanners Around the World

Over the Easter break three groups of Stanners took off for foreign lands. One group went to Italy with Mrs. Dionisi, another group went with Chris Dougherty to Scandinavia while still one more group traveled with Jim Sheldon to London and Paris. I bumped into some of the students during the week and they assured me that the travel was wonderful and tiring. Here are some pictures from the Jim Sheldon travel extravaganza.

Notice to All Alumni – President Sherry to leave Molloy

We received the following notice in the alumni office this morning. In behalf of all of the alumni I want to thank John for his years of service and commitment to Molloy.

Dear Administrators, Faculty, Staff, and Parents,

I am writing to inform you that Mr. John Sherry will be completing his service as president of Archbishop Molloy on June 30.

We are grateful to Mr. Sherry for his leadership over the last six years, including significant improvements to the facilities of the school and his work with the Directory, a group of talented individuals who serve as a local board of limited jurisdiction. We wish Mr. Sherry well as he completes six years as president of Molloy.

The Board of Trustees will initiate a search process to identify the next president of the school. We will keep you informed as the search progresses.

As a graduate of Molloy and a former teacher and administrator at the school, I know first- hand the consistent dedication of the entire faculty, staff and administration to providing the young people it serves with an outstanding education in a supportive and nurturing environment. Bro. Thomas Schady, the principal, and his administrative team will work with the president and the Board of Trustees to ensure a smooth transition.

Sincerely,

Bro. Ben Consigli, FMS
Chair of the Board of Trustees

Holy Week Liturgy – Forgiveness

All week long the Morning Prayer reminded us that this is a season of forgiveness. At this mornings liturgy the theme was ever present in the liturgical skits and in the homily presented by Fr. Shannon. On Good Friday we will hear those faithful words that are central to our beliefs – Father forgive them, for they know not what they do. As we complete our Holy Week traditions let us keep this spirit of forgiveness in our hearts.

Alumni Events

Calling all Stanners – November 6th is Reunion Time at Molloy

November 6th may seem like it is a long way off, but in the grand scheme of things, it is just around the corner. Alumni from St. Ann’s Academy and Archbishop Molloy High School will gather that evening to install the newest members into the Stanner Hall of Fame, and to celebrate the achievements we have made through the years.

Last year more than 500 Stanners gathered to celebrate in the Curran Gymnasium. The evening began with Mass and the Hall of Fame Installation Ceremony. This year the classes formally celebrating their reunions include all classes ending in either a 0 or 5. Special 50th and 25th Anniversary Medallions will be awarded to the classes of 1960 and 1985.

For additional information concerning the Hall of Fame and Reunion Celebration, please go to the Molloy website at www.molloyhs.org or call Charlie Flood, Director of Alumni Relations at 718-943-3151.

Last Call for Hall of Fame Nominations

April means more than the arrival of spring; it announces the final call for nominations to the Stanner Hall of Fame. If you wish to nominate a fellow Stanner to this honor, please send a letter to the Stanner Hall of Fame Committee, Archbishop Molloy High School, 83-53 Manton Street, Briarwood, NY 11435.

Around the School

Motivational Speaker Det. Steven McDonald Addresses Students

This past Monday, NYPD Detective Steven McDonald was invited to Molloy to give a talk on the power of life and forgiveness. The students were called to an assembly to hear Steven McDonald’s story.

On July 12, 1986 Steven and his partner confronted three suspicious young teens in Central Park. One of the kids, a 15 year old shot him three times. The incident left Steven a quadriplegic. Steven shared with us how through everything God was with him and how his faith in God has allowed him to forgive. “We forget our lives are not our own. God put us here with a purpose and a plan… It was hard, but I answered God’s call and said yes… I didn’t remain bitter and angry…” Steven said that through God’s divine love he was able to forgive and that freed him. Steven has now become a noted public speaker on behalf of the NYPD, peace initiatives in Northern Ireland, and with the US Navy (he was a hospital corpsman), to speak to young people about violence and forgiveness.
Sports Update from the A.D’s Office

As anyone with a window knows, the weather has not been kind to the baseball, softball, track or any outdoor sport this past week. On the other hand, the ark builders union is smiling all the way to the bank.

League play starts next week and though we have been working around our practice schedules, the good news is that all of the teams in the league have had to do the same thing.

We hope to have some good reports when we return from the Easter break.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

Danny Waters and Patrick Fava, both from the class of 2009 came by to submit their applications to work in the camps at Esopus this summer. From all reports, they are doing well at Binghamton and Stonybrook, and are looking forward to their work this summer.
