About

The 26th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic took place on Monday, May 7, 2012 at two prestigious courses on Long Island, Plandome Country Club and North Hills Country Club.  The new Chairman will be dedicated Stanner Charles "Chuck" Tabone '68 while A.J. Power '84 will serve as Honorary Chairman. Both are committed to making every golf outing a total success, and we're happy to have them on board for 2012. Over the last several years, the outing has sold out, so register early!! Proceeds of the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic support Archbishop Molloy High School's excellent Scholarship Program, which helps give students the opportunities they need to succeed.

History

In the summer of 1987, twenty five Stanner golfers, mostly from the class of 1979, gathered at the Rock Hill Golf Club in Manorville, Long Island for the first Stanner golf outing. Jim Kinnier, John Gibbons and Joe Smith represented the faculty with Charlie McBride, Joe Howard and Jerry Betts leading the class of 1979. All agreed that the combination of golf, good food and drink should be continued and expanded. And so it did.

A golf committee was formed and the tournament was named the Stanner Golf Classic. In 1988 the attendance increased to over fifty and the event was held at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County. Xavier Rescigno, class of 1931 and former major league pitcher with the Pittsburgh Pirates regaled the attendees with many stories from the "bigs". Although only a small amount of money,($4,000), was raised for the school, these first two events set the foundation for much better things to come.

Over the next decade, the Stanner Golf Classic grew by leaps and bounds. We spent two years at the Nissequoque Country Club in Smithtown, Long Island and the next five years at Pelham Manor Country Club in Westchester County. During those years we expanded the golf committee, created the position of Golf Chairman, added a morning shotgun to our afternoon shotgun, developed strong corporate sponsorships and participation, began a highly successful raffle, silent auction, published a journal and increased attendance to over 250 golfers.

Thanks to the efforts of the golf committee, particularly Gino and John Fazio, Jerry Schumm, Bill Rose, and Lou Milo for making corporate sponsorship explode. Their involvement and the growth of the classic continues today. In 1995 we moved the course to Plandome Country Club and in 2002 we added the North Hempstead Country Club.

In our effort to enhance and expand the Classic, the North Hills Country Club has been added to the Plandome Country Club this year. With more than 300 golfers, the day promises to be one for the record books.

At the risk of leaving someone off the list, we must simply say, “Thank you all very, very much for making this outing such a success!”

- Jim Kinnier
