A golf committee was formed and the tournament was named the Stanner Golf Classic. In 1988 the attendance increased to over fifty and the event was held at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County. Xavier Rescigno, class of 1931 and former major league pitcher with the Pittsburgh Pirates regaled the attendees with many stories from the "bigs". Although only a small amount of money,($4,000), was raised for the school, these first two events set the foundation for much better things to come. Over the next decade, the Stanner Golf Classic grew by leaps and bounds. We spent two years at the Nissequoque Country Club in Smithtown, Long Island and the next five years at Pelham Manor Country Club in Westchester County. During those years we expanded the golf committee, created the position of Golf Chairman, added a morning shotgun to our afternoon shotgun, developed strong corporate sponsorships and participation, began a highly successful raffle, silent auction, published a journal and increased attendance to over 250 golfers. | Thanks to the efforts of the golf committee, particularly Lou Milo, Bill Rose and Jerry Schumm, corporate sponsorship exploded. Their involvement and the growth of the classic continues today. In 1995 we moved the course to Plandome Country Club and in 2002 we added the North Hempstead Country Club. In our effort to enhance and expand the Classic, the North Hills Country Club has been added to the Plandome Country Club this year. With more than 300 golfers, the day promises to be one for the record books. At the risk of leaving someone off the list, we must simply say, “Thank you all very, very much for making this outing such a success!” - Jim Kinnier |
